摘要： A ball catcher for selectively catching and retaining drop balls in a well bore. The catcher is located on a workstring. A main bore (18) axially through the catcher is restrained to provide first (26) and second (28) bores of differing diameters. The first bore (26) is further restricted at a lower end, thus balls within the first bore (26) are retained and balls in the second bore (28) pass through the catcher. The bores preferably overlap to provide a channel (30) so that smaller balls can pass between the bores for release. In one embodiment, the second bore (28a) is located centrally through the catcher so that wireline tools and the like can be run through the catcher.

摘要： A downhole tool which can perform a task in a well bore, such as circulating fluid radially from the tool. The function is selectively performed by virtue of a sleeve moving within a central bore of the tool. Movement of the sleeve is effected by dropping a ball through a ball seat on the sleeve. Movement of the sleeve is controlled by an index sleeve such that the tool can be cycled back to the first operating position by dropping identical balls through the sleeve. Embodiments are described wherein the balls are deformable, the seat is deformable and the seat provides a helical channel through which the ball passes.

摘要： A cleaning tool and method of cleaning a liner top in a well bore. The tool includes cleaning elements, typically scrapers, which are arranged eccentrically to an axial bore through the tool. The elements are biased outwardly to contact an inner surface of a polished bore receptacle (PBR) at a position with a curvature to match the PBR and to present leading edges of each element when positioned at a surface of a neighbouring casing. The tool may further provide a top dress mill and act as a packer actuator sub. This provides a tool which performs a number of functions on a single trip in a well bore.

摘要： A protective arrangement or "junk bonnet" (30) for preventing debris entering a downhole tool assembly (14) employed in the drilling of a well. The junk bonnet (30) is in the form of an annular seal which fits around a tube (18) and inside a sleeve (24) which are relatively movable to operate a downhole tool assembly (14) of which they form part. The junk bonnet (30) is provided with sliding fluid seals (42, 44, 48, 50) which seal against the external surface (19) of the tube (18), and against the bore (25) of the sleeve (24). A longitudinal fluid passage (52) links opposite ends (54, 56) of the junk bonnet (30). The passage (52) is sealed in use by a plug (60) or other suitable valve. An annular volume ("C") below the junk bonnet (30), between the tube (18) and the sleeve (24), and above a seal (26) forming part of the downhole tool assembly (14) is filled through the passage (52) with hydraulic oil during setting-up and prior to closure of the passage (52) by the plug (60). This hydraulically locks the junk bonnet (30) in place on the downhole tool assembly (14), without reliance on any mechanical fastening, and yet free of susceptibility to being dislodged by normal operational movements of the downhole tool assembly (14). The upper end (56) of the junk bonnet (30) can be formed as a back-reamer, and an emergency release (72) can be incorporated.

摘要： A multi-string packer for anchoring two or more non-concentric through tubes inside a larger pipe or casing (e.g. in an oil well). The packer can be deployed downhole, set, unset, and reset at least once without being withdrawn to the surface, despite the shearing of shear elements on each such operation. A lost-motion mechanism isolates the shear elements for the first packer resetting (the second setting) from packer-setting shear forces applied to the shear elements for the first packer setting, to preserve the second setting shear elements until the packer is actually required to be set for a second time. Similarly, another lost-motion mechanism isolates to shear elements for the second packer unsetting from the packer-unsetting shear forces applied to the shear elements for the first packet unsetting, to preserve the second unsetting shear elements until the packer is actually required to be unset for a second time.As applied to a pump packer for use with a downhole electric pump, the invention enables the pump cable and completion string to be anchored and sealed inside the well casing. In the event of a wellhead fault necessitating unsetting of the packer, the string need only be withdrawn a short distance to access the wellhead fault for its repair, and then returned downhole that short distance only, since the packer can be reset at least once without being withdrawn to the surface. This avoids the need to withdraw the entire string to refurbish the packer for a second setting.
