Abstract:
A cellular telephone handset stores audio files previously recorded by the user as well as voice mail messages from other users and selectively transmitted selected ones of these files to the remote listener, or to the voice mail system of a remote user. Voice mail messages are composed, stored, transmitted, forwarded and reviewed using a voice mail system without ringing the remote party's telephone, much as email is composed, stored, transmitted and reviewed using an email server.
Abstract:
A system for replaying a broadcast sports event using a video on demand or personal video recording system. Metadata is created that subdivides the original broadcast into segments, and associates descriptive information with each segment. Playlists that specify an ordered subsequence of the sequence may be selected and used to present a variety of expanded or condensed versions of the sporting event to a viewer. Navigation controls including segment lists, specially formatted screen displays, and special functions under the control of a user-operated remote control, facilitate the interactive selection and control of the presentation.
Abstract:
This invention relates to methods and systems for accelerometer-based sensing of motion and orientation of a portable device affixed to or integral with an object, to trigger an audio or visual output based on the motion or orientation of the object the portable device is monitoring. The audio output can be pre-recorded in the device memory or can be user recorded through the “tilt and tell” device voice recording. The invention also employs unique movement and orientation to estimated usage, the person using the device, and other application specific usage information. The unique movement can also be used as user interface to the device.
Abstract:
An audio program and message distribution system in which a host system organizes and transmits program segments to client subscriber locations. The host organizes the program segments by subject matter and creates scheduled programming in accordance with preferences associated with each subscriber. Program segments are associated with descriptive subject matter segments, and the subject matter segments may be used to generate both text and audio cataloging presentations to enable the user to more easily identify and select desirable programming. A playback unit at the subscriber location reproduces the program segments received from the host and includes mechanisms for interactively navigating among the program segments. A usage log is compiled to record the subscriber's use of the provided program materials, to return data to the host for billing, to adaptively modify the subscriber's preferences based on actual usage, and to send subscriber-generated comments and requests to the host for processing. Voice input and control mechanisms included in the player allow the user to perform hands-free navigation of the program materials and to dictate comments and messages which are returned to the host for retransmission to other subscribers. The program segments sent to each subscriber may include advertising materials which the user can selectively play to obtain credits against the subscriber fee. Parallel audio and text transcript files for at least selected programming enable subject matter searching and synchronization of the audio and text files. Speech synthesis may be used to convert transcript files into audio format. Image files may also be transmitted from the server for synchronized playback with the audio programming.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for identifying unwanted email messages by transmitting metadata with an outbound email message that indicates the total number of email messages sent by that sender in a predetermined time period, or alternatively indicates the total number of email messages which are equivalent to the outgoing message that have been sent. In addition the metadata may include an identification of the sender and a “pledge” made byte sender. A pledge may take the form of a binding commitment from the sender that the information contained in the metadata is accurate, and/or that the sender promises to abide by predetermined good conduct rules designed to limit unwanted email. The outgoing message may be further signed by the sender with a digital signature that provides means for verifying the content of the message and the pledge as well as the identity of the sender.
Abstract:
A radio receiver and storage unit which concurrently and continuously receives and records a plurality of separate, simultaneously broadcast programs, and then selectively reproduces desired programs at desired times. User interface buttons selectively perform the following five functions not available on a conventional radio: Pause: suspends the reproduction of the live or recorded programming currently being played; Save: permits the listener to save the complete content of a live program currently being reproduced; Jukebox: permits the listener can select and playback previously recorded programming; Mark: allows the user to “bookmark” a specific position on a program; and Options: permits the user to obtain information about available programming, or to perform less frequently used functions.
Abstract:
Systems and methods for editing broadcast programming signals which allow a user to compile a proprietary signal tailored to the user's individual preferences are provided. Systems of the present invention include a receiver for receiving a broadcast programming signal in any broadcast format, a database memory having identification signals stored therein, a comparator for comparing portions of the broadcast signal with the identification signal in order to select those portions of the broadcast programming signal to be recorded, a data processor, and a compression buffer for storage of the selected broadcast programming signals. Methods of the present invention include receiving a broadcast programming signal, comparing the broadcast programming signal to an identification signal derived, employing a signal analyzer originally to derive the identification signals from the content of the broadcast programming before broadcast, so as to select a portion of the broadcast programming signal, and storing the selected portion in a memory.
Abstract:
Improved apparatus is described for measuring bending stiffness of dimension lumber. Innovative details are introduced that make the measurement more accurate and repeatable as well as making the apparatus simpler, more robust and easier to maintain than the prior art.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus are described for using stress wave measurements in the estimation of quality of finger joints in wood and quality of lumber, where quality is typically defined as strength. Application and measurement of stress waves in the transverse direction of the material allows localized measurements to be made, and features developed from this information are used in the quality estimation. A feature is a quantifiable characteristic developed from stress wave signals which can be used either by itself or in combination with other features to estimate quality. Examples of features include the propagation velocity of a stress wave, the attenuation of a stress wave, the difference in stress wave propagation times measured at different locations along the lumber, and the effects on amplitude and phase of frequency components of a stress wave. Treating features together as a feature vector and as input to an estimator function, estimated quality can be evaluated. The ability of the method and apparatus can be improved in some cases by performing the stress wave measurements in the presence of externally applied bending, tensile or torsional stress.
Abstract:
A device for testing sheet material, such as wood veneer, includes a rolling transducer for introducing ultrasonic signals into the veneer so as to cause travel of the signals generally in the plane of the veneer. Coupling oil filling this transducer facilitates the transmission of the signals into the veneer. Another similar rolling transducer is provided to detect the travelling ultrasonic signals. Each rolling transducer includes a special rim with an annular focusing ring for directing the ultrasonic signals to and from the veneer. A timer circuit produces a signal representing the travel time taken for an ultrasonic signal to pass between the transducers. An averaging circuit obtains an average of such travel times for each sheet and a grading circuit causes the sheet to be marked with a grade corresponding to the average travel time. A signal threshold detector prevents travel times for detected signals of a magnitude less than a preselected minimum level from being included in the average. Travel times for detected signals of a magnitude exceeding a noise level are blocked by a noise discriminator from being averaged. A variable noise level circuit adjusts the magnitude of the noise level at certain times following the transmission of an ultrasonic signal into the veneer. Detected signals having a travel time which is not between a preselected minimum and maximum time established by a time window circuit are disregarded. A calibration signal generator provides a signal of a known and adjustable time length for use in adjusting the grade corresponding to travel times.
