When the non-feed state is determined by the first determination unit and clogging is determined to have occurred on the filter by the second determination unit, the main controller drives the electric assist motor to generate electric power such that a load acting on the engine is increased.

A male spline portion provided on the hydraulic motor shaft is spline-coupled to a female spline portion provided on the electric motor shaft. A bearing is provided between the shaft insertion hole and the electric motor shaft, and a pressure tight seal is provided by being located upwardly of the bearing. Hence, spline coupling portions of the female spline portion and the male spline portion are constantly lubricated by making use of drain oil which has leaked from the hydraulic motor.

On the basis of reference torque and torque correction amount output units (T1 and T2), a torque control command pressure is calculated so that the input torques of first and second pumps are increased. The calculated torque command instruction pressure is then supplied as external command pressure to the varying mechanism of a regulator used for the first and second pumps so as to prevent the input torques of the first and second pumps from being decreased more than necessary. As a result, even when three variable displacement hydraulic pumps are used with the discharge pressure of one of the hydraulic pumps reduced by a pressure reducing valve and further the input torques of the other two hydraulic pumps are decreased by that pressure, the engine output can be efficiently utilized, and the work rate does not decrease.

The input and output disks are supported mutually concentrically with said input shaft and mutually independently rotatably. The plural power rollers are sandwiched between said input disk and said output disks. The power roller bearing rotatably supports said power rollers. The oil passage for leading lubricating oil to said power roller bearing. The mesh filter is provided in said oil passage. Accordingly, the toroidal-type continuously variable transmission can prevent an occurrence of biting-in of foreign substances at a power roller bearing, to thereby increase the life of the power roller bearing.

In the toroidal-type continuously variable transmission, the radial clearance of a second radial needle roller bearing 30 for supporting the power roller 8 on the periphery of the pivot shaft portion 26 of the displacement shaft 7 is set larger than the radial clearance of a first radial needle roller bearing 27 for supporting a support shaft portion 25 on a trunnion 6. By increasing the radial clearance of the second radial needle roller bearing 30 in this manner, an increase in the surface pressures in the contact portions between the rolling surfaces of needle rollers 32, 32 and the inner peripheral surface of the power roller 8 and the outer peripheral surface of the pivot shaft portion 26 can be restricted, thereby enhancing the durability of the toroidal-type continuously variable transmission. Also, by reducing the radial clearance of the first radial needle roller bearing 27, the inclination of the displacement shaft 7 is minimized, thereby stabilizing the rotation speed change operation thereof.
