The apparatus also includes a third steering column member supporting the first steering column member for sliding movement along an axis. The apparatus also includes a positive lock engaged with the first and second steering column members. The positive lock can operate in a locked configuration to prevent the pivotal movement. The positive lock can also operate in an unlocked configuration to allow the pivotal movement. The apparatus also includes a friction lock engaged with said first and third steering column members. The friction lock can operate in a locked configuration to prevent the sliding movement. The friction lock can also operate in an unlocked configuration to allow the sliding movement.

摘要： The subject invention provides a collapsible steering column assembly. The assembly includes a support for attachment to a vehicle. A steering column is movably supported by the support. An energy absorbing mechanism interconnects the steering column and the support for absorbing energy in response to the steering column moving relative to the support during a collision. The energy absorbing mechanism includes a elongated element and a brake for variably resisting the movement of the elongated element and absorbing the energy during the collision. The elongated element, in combination with the brake, is capable of adjustment to absorb energy at forces of various magnitude such that a universal energy absorbing device may be installed on each type of vehicle. Furthermore, the elongated element retains structural integrity after absorbing the energy and need not be replaced.

摘要： A steering column assembly is disclosed featuring a steering column carried by a release bracket having parallel connecting walls interposed between spaced sidewalls of a mounting bracket, which is for attachment to a vehicle subassembly. Shear capsules are releasably disposed within respective rearwardly-opening primary notches on the connecting walls. The capsules are connected to the mounting bracket by being disposed in respective secondary notches on the sidewalls. The capsules shear in response to an axial shear force above a predetermined threshold value and release the connecting walls to permit the steering column to collapse.

摘要： A column shroud for covering a steering column including a shroud body. The shroud body has first and second portions connectable to one another about a steering column. The shroud body defines an opening in the first portion. An ignition receptor is accessible through the opening for receiving a pass key. The column shroud also includes a coil bobbin fixed to the shroud body adjacent to the opening. In the event of an attempted theft of the vehicle, the coil bobbin would be removed from the column in the event the shroud body is removed and the vehicle would be disabled.

The composite sections include outer and inner walls spaced coaxially from each other, that mate at first and second flanges. A cavity is defined by the space between the inner and outer walls and is filled with a foam material that is disposed within. The composite steering column jacket has an increased stiffness and reduced weight when compared to conventional metal steering column jackets.
