    摘要: A vehicle steering mechanism can be supported for controlled collapse in crash situations, by constructing the steering shaft support housing as a rigid assembly having a metal die casting and tubular steel shroud as the principal components. The rigid die casting transmits a shock force from the vehicle steering wheel to shearable fasteners that connect the die casting to a mounting structure on the vehicle. Undesired resilience or spring in the steering shaft support mechanism is eliminated, such that the system has a desired predictability in frontal crash situations. The shaft housing deflection is effectively snubbed by a friction ring encircling a lower portion of the tubular steel shroud.

    摘要: A motor vehicle occupant safety device has a canister of inflator gas secured outside the passenger compartment. At least one air bag is connected to the source, and at least a portion of the air bag is stowed in the “A” pillar generally laterally relative to the passenger-side occupant prior to collision. An airtight frangible seal separates the source from the air bag. Upon collision, an electrical signal causes the seal to rupture which allows the pressurized gas to flow freely into the air bag. As the bag inflates, it moves laterally across the front of the occupant rather than toward him producing a cushion in front of the occupant. There is also a novel air bag formed from an inner bag and an outer bag.

    摘要: An impact-absorbable power transmission device is constituted by establishing a frictional spline connection between a shaft and a pipe to allow an axial slide therebetween and to forbid a relative rotation therebetween. An inner race of a universal joint is fixed to another end portion of the shaft by press-fitting. A flange for receiving a press-fitting force of the inner race is formed at an intermediate portion of the shaft. Therefore, the power transmission device ensures an impact absorbing performance while avoiding a lowering of a mechanical strength caused by the inner race installing operation.

    摘要: A steering shaft is supported for tilting-up and tilting-down movements by a pivot mechanism, and connected at its front end to a steering gear box by a joint shaft. The joint shaft passes through an opening of a dashboard and is provided with a stopper facing a rear portion of the opening. When the dashboard is driven backwards as a result of collision of the vehicle, the joint shaft having the stopper urged by the opening is driven backward along with the dashboard. Thus, the steering gear box can be moved rearwards and downwards to inhibit the forward and downward pulling of the joint shaft, thereby preventing tilting-up of the steering shaft.

    摘要: A yoke of a universal joint for a steering apparatus, the yoke including a coupling member made by press-shaping a metallic plate and formed into the shape of a tube having a split in a circumferential portion thereof and a serration on an inner peripheral surface thereof. The coupling member has one end portion, having a partially cylindrical portion and a pair of flange portions integral with the partially cylindrical portion with the split interposed therebetween, and a substantially cylindrical coupling portion at another end portion thereof. Notably, the substantially cylindrical coupling portion has a larger outer diameter than an outer diameter of the partially cylindrical portion. The coupling member further includes a threaded hole formed in one of the flange portions, and a through hole formed in the other of the flange portions and coaxial with the threaded hole for passing a bolt to be threadably engaged with the threaded hole. A coupling arm made by press-shaping a metallic plate into a U-shape and having coaxial circular holes in opposite end portions thereof and having a coupling portion on a base portion thereof is provided. A bellows has one end portion fitted onto and welded to the coupling portion of the coupling member and another end portion fitted onto and welded to the coupling portion of the coupling arm. The yoke can be made very durable and can provide good shock absorbing capability.
