An aerosol dispenser assembly is disclosed that includes a container holding a liquid product and a compressed gas propellant for propelling the liquid product from the container. A design methodology for the actuator body and swirl nozzle insert is disclosed for maintaining a small particle size or Sauter Mean Diameter (D[3, 2]) of less than 48 μm at a suitable spray rate (1.5-2 g/s), while utilizing a compressed gas VOC-free propellant for an air freshener product. As obtaining reduced particle size to compete with LPG propellants may result in a reduced spray rate, it is anticipated that one or more nozzles may be designed into the actuator body to maintain a suitable spray rate.

An actuator assembly is disclosed which can dispense chemicals, such as insect control ingredients, from an aerosol container. The actuator assembly is mountable to the aerosol container and includes a burstable barrier and an extrudable (e.g. paste) plug. Upon initial activation, the pressure from inside of the container presses the burstable barrier which in turn presses the paste plug to cause at least a portion of the plug to move to a position where it is visible and provides a cue that a delay period has started. The device can be manually activated, but is designed so that thereafter it does not need to be manually held open. The user has time to leave the room before spraying begins, and does not need to be present in the room before spraying has finished.

An aerosol grenade which spins at a high rate about more than one axis to discharge its fluid contents over a wide area even under windless conditions. The grenade includes a pressurized container, a plurality of discharge nozzles oriented so as to cause the grenade to spin about one of its axes upon discharge of the fluid contents. A fuse mechanism is provided which opens the closure for the pressurized container when a trigger block in the fuse mechanism is subjected to a lateral force upon impact of the grenade. The plane of the discharge nozzles is spaced along the longitudinal axis of the grenade from the center of gravity of the grenade. A spinning ring the plane of which is spaced from the center of the longitudinal axis of the grenade increases the erratic movement of the grenade upon discharge facilitating distribution of the grenade''s contents. The grenade is especially useful as a means of distributing tear gas, the rapid and erratic movement preventing throw back by target personnel. A preferred lachrymatory composition employed comprises orthochlorobenzylmalononitrile dissolved in N,N-dimethyl formamide or N,N-dimethyl acetamide.

Improvements in an applicator for dispensing substances including pressurized substances and substances in a foam or foam-like condition including an applicator for discharging such substances wherever needed including into body cavities or elsewhere including a tubular holder partially open at one end and a tubular applicator including a tubular housing adapted to be positioned in the holder, said housing having normally closed valve means at one end male operator means on the applicator constructed to cooperate with means formed on the partially closed end of the holder when pressed thereagainst to open the valve means and permit dispensing of the contents thereof, said operator means being constructed to engage the valve means and also to cooperate with normally closed female-type valve means on an aerosol container to establish communication between the inside of the aerosol container and the inside of the applicator housing during filling and charging of the application, and a piston slidably and sealably positioned for movement in the applicator in a direction to permit material from the aerosol container to flow into the applicator during filling and charging and to be moved in the opposite direction during a dispensing operation when the applicator is positioned in the tubular holder.
