Objective index is indicated with respect to the characteristic comparison between the front and the back sides of the reed, the right and left balance, and the hardness characteristic compared to the reference reed. A holder guiding member 11 is disposed on a rotating table 2, and a holder 10 is detachably mounted on the holder guiding member 11. The holder 10 holds the test object reed R. Testing of the front and the back surfaces of the reed R is performed by turning the holder 10 upside down. A probe 20 is made contact with the surface of the reed R with the constant pressure force, and the deformation degree of the probe 20 is detected by a displacement sensor 30 with rotating the rotating table 2. The rigidity distribution of reed R in the width direction is obtained by the displacement sensor 30. The rigidity distribution characteristics of the front and the back sides are tested by displaying the front-side characteristic graph and the reversed back-side characteristic graph on one screen. The balance index is calculated from the areas resultantly generated by superimposing the front-and-back-side characteristic graphs with the reversed graphs thereof. The hardness index is obtained based on the integrating value of the front-and-back-side characteristics and the integrating value of the front-and-back-side characteristics of the reference reed.

The invention relates to a method of producing parts for woodwind and brass musical instruments using briarwood, either from the root or branch thereof, said wood being kept moist from the moment it is cut until it is boiled in water for 16 hours, dried in anaerobic conditions and cured under cover for at least six months and for up to two or more years. The following parts can be thus produced: mouthpiece, tongue, clarinet barrel, flute head or bell. The aforementioned parts, which are not affected by humidity, better produce and carry the sound. In addition, a wide range of sounds is possible, such as jazz, classical, soloist, orchestra and band.

An oboe reed gouge device has a carriage upon which a blade is carried at an angle to raw cane material from which a reed is formed. The carriage is rotatably and longitudinally slidable on a rod to move relative to the cane. The rod has opposing end segments with coincident axes that are offset from the axis of a central rod segment. By rotating the rod about the axes of the end segments, the carriage, which is mounted on the central rod segment, is moved laterally relative to the cane. By mounting a gauge finger against the central rod segment, the amount of lateral displacement can be measured and displayed. A groove is formed in the carriage, and the blade is mounted in the groove using a pin with a drive screw, and a second screw to lock the blade in position.

An apparatus for abrading a reed for a musical instrument comprises: a base having two top surfaces tilted toward each other and having tapered parallel tracks in its side edge surfaces; and a carriage slidable on the tracks. The carriage includes an abrasive surface adopted to contact a reed placed on one of the top surfaces of the base.

A method for treating the natural cane reed used in woodwind musical instruments. The method includes contacting at least the proximal portion of said reed with a polymer treatment liquid, in which the liquid delivers at least 1% by weight of polymer into the reed, based upon the percentage increase in dry weight of that portion of said reed contacted by the liquid. The reed remains substantially water-permeable, yet is rendered resistant to degradation by saliva. An impregnated reed is also described, in which at least the proximal portion of the reed has been impregnated by a liquid that includes a non-toxic polymeric material that is water-insoluble upon drying or curing within the reed. The impregnated portion of the reed is at least 25% as permeable to water as an identical portion of an equivalent untreated reed, yet is resistant to degradation by saliva.

A woodwind instrument reed maintenance device that extends the life of a used reed by removing the tip of the reed by burning. The device achieves extended life, and a brighter or a more projected sound from a used reed due to the cauterization of the woody longitudinal fibers called vascular bundles, running vertically the entire length of the reed. The device holds the reed securely and is designed to retain the burned tip at the precise angles or arc of the cut of the tip so as to maintain a working relationship with the woodwind mouthpiece. In addition, the top portion utilizes an angled tip to not only secure the reed in the device, but to prevent back burn to playable areas of the reed surfaces.

The ribbon harp is a mouth-blown musical instrument consisting of a thin ribbon-like textile or polymeric object. When held between the thumbs and blown on by mouth, the ribbon harp vibrates in the audible frequency range and produces a musical note. The player may vary the tension in the ribbon in order to vary the fundamental frequency with which the ribbon harp vibrates, thus producing higher or lower pitches. Various methods may be used to provide lengthwise strength. Dampening properties can be tuned by varying properties in the crosswise direction. Aerodynamic surface treatments are provided so that the ribbon harp commences to vibrate immediately on being blown across. A wrist harness or gauntlet and a thumb cot are described as aids to the player.

The invention relates to a mouthpiece for a clarinet and saxophone to be used with a reed. The mouthpiece has a tip and a face having two spaced sides extending towards each other from the tip. The face has an opening adjacent to the tip between the sides and a longitudinal bore communicating with the opening. The face is arcuately curved downwardly toward the tip thereby forming a face gap distance between the face and the reed. A wing member extends from each of the sides away from the opening so that the mouthpiece flares outwardly at the face to direct air into the opening. The wing members extend substantially to the tip of the mouthpiece. In addition, a spiral profile may be formed on a cylindrical surface defining the longitudinal bore. The wing members fill triangular spaced gaps between the lips to direct air into the mouthpiece opening. The mouthpiece improves the tonal qualities of the instrument and requires less effort than with conventional mouthpieces.

A case for holding, storage, protection and working of cane reeds for woodwind instruments which secures a number of reeds to protect against damage and distortion. The reed case maintains reeds in a flat condition during storage, insulates them from impact during storage, acts as a working surface in the restoration of desired reed qualities, and provides a container with a controlled environment for reed storage. The individual reeds are secured flat against interior surfaces of a central core member. The surfaces can be provided with ventilation holes for homogeneous reed drying. The reeds are protected from contact or damage by the core member. An outer cover can be added to further protect the reeds and to provide a controlled environment for storage. The holder taught in the present invention also provides a second set of flat surfaces, on the exterior of the core member opposite the reed securing surfaces, for use as working surfaces in the adjustment of reeds.

A means and method for flavored wood reeds for woodwind instruments wherein a natural cane woodwind reed contains a non-toxic absorbable edible flavoring to give a pleasant taste to the reed. A method of imparting the flavoring to the reed includes saturating the pores of the cane with the flavoring.
