Abstract:
A gouging machine for cane includes: (a) a base; (b) a cane bed, having a trough disposed parallel to a bottom surface of the cane bed, and having grooves on opposing sides thereof that slope at a groove angle with respect to the bottom surface of the cane bed, the cane bed being affixed to the base so that the trough is parallel to a top surface of the base and to a predetermined line; and (c) clamps, disposed on the opposing sides of the cane bed, each clamp having a tongue that slopes at the groove angle with respect to a clamping surface thereof, which clamping surface is adapted to grip edges of cane placed in the trough of the cane bed, and wherein the tongues of the clamps slidably engage the grooves of the cane bed so that the clamping surface of the clamps are parallel to a bottom of the trough.
Abstract:
A method of manufacturing elongate wooden handles for floor mops and the like comprises (a) splitting a green bamboo cane lengthwise and then spreading it into the shape of a sheet, (b) planing both surfaces of the sheet to give it a substantially uniform thickness, (c) cutting the bamboo sheet into an elongate section of selected width, (d) drying that bamboo section, (e) providing an assembly comprising a pair of dowels, at least one elongate core member, said bamboo sections and an adhesive, with the bamboo section wrapped around the dowels and the core member and the adhesive disposed between the bamboo section and the dowels and core member, (f) heating that assembly under pressure so the adhesive will bond the dowels and core member to the surrounding bamboo section and thereby form an elongate pole, and (g) turning the elongate pole to a selected outer diameter.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a manufacture method for processing bamboo timber into high strength and xylon type bamboo timber methods for rearranging bamboo timber fibers, and articles formed of the xylon type bamboo timber.
Abstract:
Composite panels and pulp, and paper products of the pulp, are produced from Arundo donax. In the fabrication of the composite panels, Arundo donax is comminuted to a suitable size, combined with a binder, and consolidated into panels that meet standards for construction and/or furniture grade panels. The Arundo donax particulates may be combined with wood particulates to produce a mixed furnish that can be used in the preparation of composite panels. Comminuted Arundo donax is treated, in conventional pulping processes, to produce a high tensile strength pulp that can be used in the production of paper. The pulp has a lighter color than wood pulp, and thereby uses less bleaching chemicals to achieve a desired whiteness. The pulp can be combined with wood pulp to produce a variety of products.

Abstract:
A profiling apparatus for manufacturing musicians' reed assemblies to individual preference includes a rotating drum, to which is attached reed cane material, and a profiling blade for shaping the reed along with a supporting base and sides. The blade is attached to a rolling blade support member and is adjustable for cutting angle and depth. In a preferred embodiment the drum is translucent and illuminated from the interior to aid the operator in profiling the reed.
Abstract:
A hand-operated precision profiling tool for use in fabricating double-reed mouthpieces for double-reed musical instruments employs a reed support that is rotatably mounted on a base adjacent a manually-operated cutting assembly. The reed support holds a section of reed stock and a profiling template in fixed alignment for rotation about a common axis. The cutting assembly, comprising a blade and a stylus on a movable carriage, shaves a selected portion of the reed stock with strokes of the carriage parallel to the common axis, the stylus tracing the contour of the template as the blade shaves the reed stock accordingly. A handwheel enables hand rotation of the reed support within predetermined limits to select the portion shaved, and the reed support may include separate oboe and english horn nests on opposite sides to enable use for either size reed.
