    摘要: An oboe reed gouging device includes a base, a pair of pedestals, a rod supported between the pedestals, and a bed pivotally attached to the base for holding a cane to be gouged into an oboe reed. The oboe reed gouging device further includes a first and second carriage portion which houses a blade. The two part construction of the carriage enables adjustment of the blade with respect to the bed without movement of the bed. The blade is held by a pair of cylinders for providing greater surface contact on the blade to prevent pivotal movement of the blade. The blade can be advanced and retracted by a pushing screw having a collar and a groove engagable with a pair of pins. Each of the adjustments, including an adjustment of the bed with respect to the rod, can be made with a single adjustment, making re-adjustment easy.

    摘要: A method for treating the natural cane reed used in woodwind musical instruments. The method includes contacting at least the proximal portion of said reed with a polymer treatment liquid, in which the liquid delivers at least 1% by weight of polymer into the reed, based upon the percentage increase in dry weight of that portion of said reed contacted by the liquid. The reed remains substantially water-permeable, yet is rendered resistant to degradation by saliva. An impregnated reed is also described, in which at least the proximal portion of the reed has been impregnated by a liquid that includes a non-toxic polymeric material that is water-insoluble upon drying or curing within the reed. The impregnated portion of the reed is at least 25% as permeable to water as an identical portion of an equivalent untreated reed, yet is resistant to degradation by saliva.

    摘要: The present invention provides a unique configuration for a reed and mouthpiece assembly for a woodwind instrument, such as a clarinet or saxophone, wherein the reed is formed with a special configuration having a mating shape defined therein which is engageable with respect to a protruding member or members extending outwardly from the generally planar reed mounting surface of the woodwind mouthpiece. A slot or other aperture can be defined in the non-vibrating clamped portion of the reed in order to facilitate alignment thereof during mounting with respect to a generally planar reed mounting area of the woodwind mouthpiece. A uniquely configured mouthpiece having a protruding member in combination with a uniquely shaped reed for engagement therewith provides a self-aligning and self-centering reed which is usable with any type of attachment mechanism including conventional or other ligatures as well as the unique securement device described herein. The engagement between the protruding member and the unique reed provides for faster and easier alignment during reed installation onto a woodwind mouthpiece despite what type of ligature is used. Preferably the protruding member or members are removable to facilitate use of the mouthpiece with a conventional reed configuration if desired.

    摘要: This invention consists of a wind instrument mouthpiece primarily intended for trumpet or cornet, although it could be utilized for other wind instruments as well without departing from the concept of the invention. It features an angled shank as the preferred embodiment of the invention. The mouthpiece could also be constructed with a curved shank or with an angle at the juncture of the shank and the cup of the mouthpiece as alternative embodiments. The upswept angle of the mouthpiece allows the player to maintain a horizontal bell position while tilting their head downward.     摘要: A hard surface of an applicator which may be formed by a diamond coating is placed in abutment against the reed of a single reed instrument such as a clarinet or saxophone or a double reed instrument such as an oboe. In a single reed instrument, the applicator is held tightly against the reed by means of a ligature which fits around the mouthpiece of the instrument to hold the reed and the applicator tightly together. In a double reed instrument such as an oboe, the staple or metal tube to which the reed is attached is coated at its top with a hard surface which may be formed by a diamond coating. The reed is abutted against the diamond surface by tightly tying a string around the cane thereby firmly securing it to the staple. The constraint of the reed in this manner makes it easier to play the instrument.

    摘要: The present invention, is a new design for a woodwind musical instrument mouthpiece capable of harmonic vibration. The mouthpiece is fitted with an interchangeable tone-altering member including an interchangeable secondary reed having a wave form which vibrates inside the tone chamber of the vibratable mouthpiece for the purpose of adding intensity and character to the tone quality when the mouthpiece is played with an associated appropriate musical instrument the secondary reed includes on one end thereof a wedge-shaped member which alters the size of the tone chamber and, thereby, further changes the tone produced by the instrument. The interchangeable, tone-altering element is preferably mounted within the interior of the tone chamber such that the secondary reed is positioned in a plane substantially on the longitudinal axis of the tone chamber and is positioned on the side of the secondary reed facing the primary reed and at the end nearest the opening of the mouthpiece tapering in the direction of the opening of the mouthpiece. The combined tone-altering member is positioned within the interior of the tone chamber and retained therein by friction alone against opposite sides of the tone chamber. Varying the sizes and shapes of the wedge, the interchanging of the combined tone-altering element combined with the harmonic vibration of the mouthpiece induces a wave form which intensifies the tone or sound of the instrument and allows the individual artist to produce the varying volume and types of sound that may be produced.

    摘要: A holder for a single musical instrument reed provides the proper pressures upon a reed being held therein, to assure that a moist reed will dry properly without warping after use. The present holder has a laterally bowed, outwardly convex first panel and an opposite flat second panel, with the reed fitting therebetween. A pair of longitudinal ribs extend along the inner surface of the first panel and bear against the curved surface of the reed stored therein, to hold the opposite flat surface of the reed securely against the flat inner surface of the second panel and assure that the reed cannot bend or warp within the holder. The holder is preferably formed of a polyethylene plastic material, which allows the sides to be flexed inwardly to bow the first panel away from the reed, thereby allowing the reed to be withdrawn from the holder.
