A voltage controlled oscillator includes a resonant circuit which is connected with an active circuit. In the resonant circuit, a variable capacitance diode is connected with a resonator via a transmission line, and a capacitive circuit is connected in parallel with the variable capacitance diode. By setting the length of the transmission line to an appropriate value ranging from, for example, about one quarter to about one half of the wavelength of the resonant frequency, the frequency change width can increase, while maintaining the frequency linearity because of connection of the capacitive circuit.

An oscillator circuit is a closed loop including an amplifying circuit and a feedback circuit. The amplifying circuit includes a pair of amplifiers, which also function as impedance buffers, and a first phase-shift circuit. The feedback circuit includes a second phase-shift circuit and a piezoelectric vibrator. The second phase-shift circuit is capable of adjusting the phase and gain of the feedback circuit. The first phase-shift circuit of the amplifying circuit is arranged between the pair of amplifiers and is separated, in terms of impedance, from the second phase-shift circuit. The first phase-shift circuit is capable of adjusting the phase of the entire closed loop.

A voltage-variable capacitor uses the channel-to-substrate junction from a gated diode formed from a metal-oxide-semiconductor transistor. The transistor gate has at least two contacts that are biased to different voltages. The gate acts as a resistor with current flowing from an upper gate contact to a lower gate contact. The gate-to-source voltage varies as a function of the position. A critical voltage is where the gate-to-source voltage is equal to the transistor threshold. A portion of the gate that has gate voltages above the critical voltage has an inversion layer or conducting channel under the gate. Another portion of the gate has gate voltages below the critical voltage, and thus no channel forms. By varying either the gate voltages or the source voltage, the area of the gate that has a channel under it is varied, varying the channel-to-substrate capacitance. Separate gate arms reduce bias current.

A temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) comprises a voltage-controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO) having a crystal unit, a compensating voltage generator for generating a compensating voltage applied to the voltage-controlled crystal oscillator, a low pass filter inserted between the compensating voltage generator and voltage-controlled crystal oscillator, and a switching element connected in parallel with the low pass filter for short-circuiting across the low pass filter. In a manufacturing process of the temperature-compensated crystal oscillator, switching element is brought into a conducting state when an excitation electrode of the crystal unit is irradiated with an ion beam for adjusting the oscillation frequency.

A high-frequency crystal oscillator capable of outputting a signal at a frequency, for example, higher than 500 MHz without using a multiplication amplifier. The high-frequency crystal oscillator comprises a voltage controlled Colpitts oscillation circuit operating at the fundamental frequency of a quartz-crystal element, means for increasing the level of harmonic component in an output from the Colpitts oscillation circuit, an SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) filter for selecting a component of a predetermined order of the harmonic component, and a broadband amplifier for amplifying the component selected by the SAW filter. The means for increasing the levels of harmonic component is, for example, a resistor for setting the operating point of a transistor in the oscillation circuit such that an output signal is distorted.
