    摘要: A gauge with a light transmitting pointer and a light-transmitting dial plate having a surface with indicia for a variable represented by the dial, at least one light source facing a hub of the pointer and positioned rearwardly from the rear surface of the dial plate for illuminating the dial plate. The light-transmitting pointer is mounted for rotational movement about an axis normal to the dial plate. The pointer hub is concentric with the axis, extending through the dial plate and projecting both forwardly and rearwardly from the plate, and an indicator projecting laterally from the hub across a portion of the front surface of the dial plate. The portion of the hub extending rearwardly of the dial plate is shaped to capture light directly from the light source so that light enters the hub and propagates forwardly through the hub, and then laterally from the hub into the indicator to illuminate the indicator.

    摘要: An instrument gauge display for a vehicle dash includes a transparent dial having an upper surface partially covered by black paint and a lower surface covered with white paint. Uncovered areas on the upper surface define a plurality of graphical images that indicate a vehicle operating condition. A light guide, supported within a light housing, is positioned underneath the dial. The light housing and at least one light source is mounted to a printed circuit board, which is supported underneath the light guide by a vehicle structure. The light guide includes a plurality of scattering elements that are positioned generally underneath each of the graphical areas on the dial. The light source cooperates with the light guide and scattering elements to improve the light efficiency.

    摘要: A liquid level monitor for monitoring the level of liquids in a remote or shielded container and providing a signal proportional to any one of an infinite number of levels within a given range. The monitor has a sheet sealingly engaging an aperture in the container which extends vertically over the range of levels to be monitored. An external light source provides light which shines upon the light transmitting material. An external lens may be used to direct any light reflected by the light transmitting material, the intensity of which will be inversely proportional to liquid level, to a light receiving station. The light received at the receiving station is then conducted, preferably by means of fiber optics, to a remote monitoring station. The monitoring station may be a visual display or may convert the light received into a signal, proportional to intensity, for use by an indicating or controlling device. The level of liquid in the container and changes thereto may also be used to monitor the stability of the device to which the container is mounted.

    摘要: An apparatus for measuring minute deflections comprising a straight rod of a flexible light-conducting material, such as a glass fiber having one of its ends and the adjacent end portion provided with a coat of a light-reflecting substance, such as silver, a source of light arranged to direct a collimated beam through a beam splitter into the opposite end of the rod coaxially therewith, a photomultiplier located to be impinged upon by the light beam reflected by the coated end portion of the rod and deflected by the beam splitter, and means measuring the output of the photomultiplier. When the coated end portion of the rod bends, as it does when exposed to a flowing fluid, or when in contact with a vibrating surface, absorption losses of the reflected beam increase within the coated end portion of the rod, the light received by the photomultiplier decreases and the output of the photomultiplier decreases in proportion to the degree to which the coated end of the rod is bent. The bend of the coated end of the rod in turn is proportionate to the speed of flow of the fluid or the amplitude of the vibrations to which the surface is subjected.
