摘要： In one embodiment, a film-based lightguide comprises a plurality interior light directing edges in a tapered light mixing region with curved sections which redirect light within the tapered light mixing region of the film. The interior light directing edges may be formed by cuts in the film that create an air gap between internal edges of the film. In one embodiment, the difference between radii of curvature of neighboring radii of arc sections of interior light directing edges is within 20% of an average distance between the arc sections. In one embodiment, the interior light directing edges totally internally reflect light propagating through the tapered light mixing region such that the light propagates at a smaller angle to a direction orthogonal to a width direction and orthogonal to the thickness direction of the film.

摘要： An electronic device may have a waveguide, an input coupler that couples light into the waveguide, and an optical coupler that couples the light out of the waveguide. A medium may be layered onto the waveguide. The input coupler may include a first surface relief grating (SRG) and the optical coupler may include a second SRG in the medium. The first SRG may be a non-binary staircase SRG having ridges with multiple steps. The second SRG may be a binary SRG having troughs that extend to the height of the lowest steps of the first SRG. A reflective layer may fill the first SRG. Forming the input coupler using a staircase SRG may serve to maximize the in-coupling efficiency of the input coupler, thereby maximizing the efficiency with which the light is provided to an eye box.

The backlight can include a light guide plate that is illuminated via a light transmitting element that is coupled to a light source. The light guide plate, in turn, illuminates the display panel. A first expansion is achieved using two distinct sets of mutually-parallel partially-reflecting surfaces, each set handing a different part of an overall field-of-view presented to the eye. In some cases, a single image projector provides image illumination to two sets of facets that are integrated into the LOE. 摘要： A light emitting device comprises a lightguide formed from a film having an array of coupling lightguides in the form of strips extending from a lightguide region of the film, the coupling lightguides are folded and stacked, and a light source is positioned to emit light into edges of the stacked coupling lightguides to propagate into a light mixing region and then into a light emitting region. The light mixing region comprises a plurality of reflecting surfaces that reflect a portion of the light from the coupling lightguides toward one or more of the lateral edges of the film prior to exiting the film in the light emitting region. The plurality of reflecting surfaces may a light transmitting material printed in the form of lines on the surface of the film and may improve the uniformity of light emitted from the light emitting region.
