A method is disclosed for making an isochronous balance-wheel-and-spring assembly for a horological movement in which one spring out of a series of springs is paired with a balance wheel. The spring has characteristics that vary by comparison with other springs of the series, and the spring is designed to be mounted on the staff of the balance-wheel via a collet. One collet out of a set of collets of different sizes is selected on the basis of the spring's characteristics. The collets of different sizes have connection points for attachment of the spring that are located (after assembly) at different distances from the center of the balance staff, the choice of the collet of the most appropriate size facilitating the adjustment of the balance-wheel-and-spring assembly.

A mechanical oscillator system comprising a balance wheel and a spiral or helicoidal balance spring for use in horological mechanisms or other precision instruments. The balance spring is made of a non-magnetic composite, polymer, carbon or ceramic material, preferably a composite material of carbon fibres in a polymer, carbon or ceramic matrix, and the balance wheel is made from a non-magnetic ceramic. The values of the thermal expansion coefficients for the balance spring and balance wheel are similar, very small and stable over a wide temperature range. The expansion coefficients in the axial sense of the spring and of the balance wheel are of opposite sign and they compensate one another. The density of these materials is smaller than that of the currently used metals. Through this combination of materials it is possible to obtain significant advantages and a higher level of accuracy and stability compared with metal oscillator systems.

A system and method are provided for calculating the period of a mechanical clock while minimizing the effects of extraneous noise. The method of the invention senses three sounds from the clock and calculates the period of the clock based on those three sounds. The method defines a blanking period between the first and the second sounds and the second and the third sounds. During this blanking period, the method ignores all sound to prevent such sound from being mistaken for sounds from the clock. The method also defines an expected time interval between sounds from the clock. The system senses the beats of a mechanical clock while minimizing noise. The system includes a pick-up device, an amplifier coupled to the pick-up device, and a microcontroller configured to control the gain of the amplifier so that the expected time delay interval becomes approximately equal to the actual time interval, thereby minimizing noise. The system also supports a mode in which the durations of two consecutive half-periods are compared to assess their uniformity.
