    摘要: A modular magnetostrictive displacement sensor is disclosed having a waveguide of magnetostrictive material extending from a first housing and protected by a member of fiber reinforced composite material. There is circuitry in the first housing for generating electrical pulses along the waveguide and a converter for generating an electrical signal in response to a torsion pulse in the waveguide caused by a magnet disposed proximate the waveguide when the electrical pulse passes the magnet position. In one embodiment the waveguide and its protective member is received within a second housing. One or more magnets may be mounted within the second housing or externally on or near the second housing for movement to the waveguide. Alternatively the sensor may be used without the second housing.

    摘要: An extensometer for measuring strain in a specimen on which the extensometer is mounted which has two arms joined together at first ends, and with specimen engaging knife edges at the second ends. The knife edges will engage a specimen at spaced locations, so that when the specimen is subjected to a load, the knife edges will separate, and the amount of separation will be an indication of the strain in the specimen. The distance between the knife edges is known as the "gage length" and the present invention relates to providing for mounting the knife edge contact points in a selected plurality of positions in which the gage length of the extensometer is changed from other of the positions of the knife edges.

    摘要: A specimen grip for a test specimen that has an actuator for operating the grip remotely mounted and coupled to the grip through a tubular housing which provides for temperature isolation between the grip and the actuator. The grip is specifically adapted to be used in environmental chambers where the grip must operate in either high or low temperatures which can have an effect on the hydraulic actuator used in the grip and connected devices, such as load sensors. By maintaining the actuator on the exterior of the environmental chamber by having a pair of modules that are connected by a sectional connector, a grip can be installed through small ports in the environmental chamber. Once installed, the assembly permits viable operation because the actuator is temperature isolated from the chamber.

    摘要: A capacitive extensometer has an extensometer frame formed of a pair of arms connected together about a hinge axis at first remote ends, and having second ends which include specimen contacting members for engaging the surfaces of a specimen to be tested. A capacitive type sensing arrangement is mounted on the arms, and is used with conventional circuitry for determining arm motion. The sensing is made so that it can be compensated for nonlinearities and minimizes undesirable extraneous effects by utilizing concave and convex shaped mating surfaces on the sensing elements. The ability to mount and protect the capacitor sensor approximately, while obtaining a relatively large output signal enhances the operability of the extensometer.

    摘要: A non-contact, displacement transducer (optical extensometer), which is relatively simple to make and operate, and therefore low cost, utilizes 35 mm camera optics for the lens system and will focus a beam of light along a linear path of light sensitive elements representing a gauge length of a specimen or member. Flags or similar indicators that change the pattern of the light beam are mounted or marked on the specimen at two spaced loations. As the specimen is loaded, the flags will change in spacing, and, as shown, the change in the location of shadow will cause changes in the affected light sensitive elements which provide outputs that indicate displacement in the specimen. The sensing circuitry providing the output is compact and easily mounted within a module carrying the lens. The module may be mounted directly to a test specimen frame.

The loading fixture is compact, and substantially eliminates cross coupling of horizontal loading due to steering motion of the device, even though the steering motions provide for large steering excursions. The loading is tire coupled to simulate actual conditions, including wheel hop that occurs during road travel, and further provides for inherent cross coupling compensation to permit easy instrumentation and very close simulation of road induced vehicle vibrations during the testing process. The entire steering linkage can be tested, including tie rods, tie rod ends, and the wheel suspension mechanism.

    摘要: An optical grid analyzer automatically determines strain in sheet metal during or following a forming operation by measuring the change in radius of open circles which are stretched into ellipse patterns as a result of the forming operation. The system includes a hand-held video camera unit which produces an analog video image of one of the ellipse patterns. An interface device converts the analog image to a binary image, and then converts the binary image to a transition point image which represents the coordinates of those pixels located at an edge of the pattern. A digital computer sorts the transition point data into inner and outer edges of the pattern. The digital computer then derives major and minor radii for the outer edge and for the inner edge, and averages the inner and outer edge radii to produce average major and minor radii representing the center of the pattern. The computer then calculates strain values based upon the average major and minor radii and the radius of the undeformed circle.

    摘要: A clamp assembly for selectively clamping a movable cross-head assembly to each column of a press having a plurality of columns. The clamp assembly includes an inner clamp sleeve positioned concentrically about each column. The inner clamp sleeve is slidably longitudinal with respect to the column and has an inner generally cylindrical surface for engaging the column. An outer clamp sleeve is secured to the cross-head assembly concentrically about the inner clamp sleeve. The inner and outer clamp sleeves are threadeably secured together to limit longitudinal movement of one clamp sleeve with respect to the other. Although threaded together, there is sufficient clearance between the opposing threads of the inner and outer clamp sleeves to define a helical chamber therebetween. A hydraulic fluid system is provided for selectively introducing pressurized hydraulic fluid into the helical chamber. The pressure of the hydraulic fluid causes the inner clamp sleeve to shrink so that its inner surface is urged substantially uniformly against the column to limit longitudinal movement of the cross-head assembly with respect to the column.
