In the above apparatus, a descrambler descrambles a transport stream output from a front end unit and supplies it to a digital interface and a demultiplexer. The demultiplexer extracts from the transport stream a compressed video signal and a compressed audio signal of a program specified by a user, and supplies the extracted signals to an MPEG decoder. The MPEG decoder decompresses the supplied video signal and the audio signal and supplies them to the digital interface, an NTSC encoder, and an audio signal D/A converter. The digital interface supplies either of the transport stream or the decompressed data to a digital external unit under the control of the controller.

In situations where data to be transmitted via a predetermined network (e.g., IEEE 1394) is absent (i.e., missing, incomplete, intentionally blank, or not ready to be transmitted), the transmission method allows for the format of the absent data to be determined by the receiving side. According to this transmission method, the data transmission packets include a label section that indicates the format of the data or the absence of data. When the label section indicates an absence of data, a label group section is included in the data transmission packet to indicate the format of the data which is absent. This allows the receiving side to determine the format of the data that it should be receiving.

If the value of the time stamp becomes not more than the value of the time stamp attached to the previous packet as a result of providing shortened offset time due to increased bit rate of the original packet string, the packet is discarded so as to protect the transmission from being stopped.
