A hitless wavelength selective optical device includes a first thermo-optic switch (TOS), a second TOS, a first waveguide, a second waveguide, a third waveguide, a heating element and a control unit. The first TOS includes receives a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) signal at a first port of the first TOS. The second TOS provides at least one channel of the WDM signal at a first port of the second TOS. The first waveguide is coupled between second ports of the first and second TOS. The second waveguide includes a tunable filter that reflects a selected channel from the received WDM signal and coupled between the third ports of the first and second TOS.

The voice print system of the present invention is a subword-based, text-dependent automatic speaker verification system that embodies the capability of user-selectable passwords with no constraints on the choice of vocabulary words or the language. Automatic blind speech segmentation allows speech to be segmented into subword units without any linguistic knowledge of the password. Subword modeling is performed using a multiple classifiers. The system also takes advantage of such concepts as multiple classifier fusion and data resampling to successfully boost the performance. Key word/key phrase spotting is used to optimally locate the password phrase. Numerous adaptation techniques increase the flexibility of the base system, and include: channel adaptation, fusion adaptation, model adaptation and threshold adaptation.

A device having a magneto-resistive element, a first conductor proximate to the magneto-resistive element, and a second conductor proximate to the magneto-resistive element. The magneto-resistive element is exposed to a magnetic field generated by a first electrical pulse carried by the first conductor. The magneto-resistive element is also exposed to a magnetic field generated by a second electrical pulse carried by the second conductor. The second electrical pulse is delayed relative to the first electrical pulse.

A memory device includes memory cells having a re-writeable element and a write-once element in series with the re-writeable element. The re-writeable element is programmable between a high resistance state and a low resistance state. The write-once element can be an anti-fuse element that is programmable from a high resistance state to a low resistance state, or a fuse element that is programmable from a low resistance state to a high resistance state. The two possible states for the re-writeable element and the two possible states for the write-once element allow the memory cells to store four different bits.

Light beams emitted from an optical fiber are converted into parallel light beams by a lens, and then allowed to pass through a Faraday device, followed by being converged to an incident end of the optical fiber by a lens. The Faraday device is applied with a magnetic field in a direction of the optical axis thereof from a coil. Moreover, the Faraday device is applied with a magnetic field in a direction perpendicular to the optical axis by a pair of magnets. When an electric current flowing in a coil 74 is changed from I to -I, the direction of a synthesized magnetic field can be rotated. Therefore, by arbitrarily changing the electric current flowing in the coil, polarization of transmission light can be controlled.

Embodiments for injecting air into exhaust ports of an engine are provided. In one example, a multi-cylinder engine method comprises combusting a rich air-fuel mixture, injecting air into a first cylinder's exhaust port and not into a second cylinder's exhaust port during the first cylinder's exhaust stroke, and injecting air into the second cylinder's exhaust port and not into the first cylinder's exhaust port during the second cylinder's exhaust stroke. In this way, injection into each exhaust port may be timed with exhaust release into each exhaust port.

A communication comprises a plurality of digital subscriber line (DSL) links, a first node having at least one application port configured for an elastic service and a plurality of DSL ports, and a second node having at least one application port configured for an elastic service and a plurality of DSL ports. Each of the first and second nodes is configured to interleave data received over the at least one application port across the plurality of DSL ports, each DSL port allocated a set of DSL timeslots for transport of the data received over the at least one application port. When a failure is detected on one of the DSL links, each of the first and second nodes is configured to interleave the data received over the at least one application port across the remaining DSL ports not connected to the failed DSL link without adjusting the set of DSL timeslots allocated to each of the remaining DSL ports for transport of the data from the at least one application port.
