摘要: The present invention is drawn to compositions and methods of generating epoxide group-functionalized latex particulates in a liquid suspension, as well as compositions and methods of preparing ink-jet inks. Steps of the methods can include forming an emulsion including a continuous hydrophilic phase and a discontinuous hydrophobic phase, wherein the discontinuous hydrophobic phase includes a plurality of monomers. The plurality of monomers can comprise epoxide group-forming monomers and support-forming monomers. Other steps include copolymerizing the monomers to form precursor latex particulates dispersed within the hydrophilic phase, and reacting the precursor latex particulates with a base to form epoxide group-functionalized latex particulates. These latex particulates can be used in a wide variety of applications, including in ink-jet ink printing applications.

摘要: Modified dyes, inks containing modified dyes, and associates methods of manufacture are described. The modified dyes are made by adding a hydrocarbon chain to the unmodified dyes through a hydroxyl, amine, or phenolic functional group. The modification is accomplished using compounds containing reactive groups selected from acid chlorides or halogenated hydrocarbon chains. The modified dyes provide enhanced water fastness and increased dispersibility of the dyes and associated inks.

摘要: The invention is directed to amphipathic polymeric particles that serve as both the dispersant and the binder in water based inks, ink compositions containing these particles, and methods for making the particles. The polymeric particles contain both hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties with a pre-determined structure, and have an average diameter of 50 to 500 nm. The amphipathic polymeric particles may be prepared by a side-chain conversion method or a polymerization process involving an ATRP step, with or without a cross-linking agent. This invention improves the stability of polymer and inks by both ionic and steric stabilization of the suspended polymer particles.

摘要: A method for increasing adhesion between a substrate and a polymeric imprintable material during an imprinting procedure. The method includes chemically bonding a plurality of molecules to a surface of a substrate to form a self-assembled monolayer thereon. A monomer is copolymerized with the self-assembled monolayer to form a polymeric imprintable material that is chemically bonded to the self-assembled monolayer. Adhesion between the polymeric imprintable material and the substrate is substantially increased by the self-assembled monolayer.

摘要: A method for stabilizing a dye in an ink comprising the dye and a vehicle is provided. The ink is intended for printing on a print medium, which may comprise a variety of surfaces. The method comprises: (a) providing at least one dye moiety (molecule or monomer); (b) encapsulating the dye moiety in a transparent polymeric matrix to form an encapsulated dye particle that provides a barrier to protect the dye moiety; and (c) incorporating the encapsulated dye particle in the ink. The dye moiety is substantially water-insoluble. Consequently, the method of the present invention enables the use of hydrophobic colorants in a hydrophilic vehicle. A hydrophobic film thus forms on the print medium upon drying.

摘要: Lightfast additives for inkjet inks are provided. These additives exhibit excellent lightfastness of many dyestuffs (both water-soluble and water-insoluble). The lightfast additives exhibit good water solubility and significant effect on dye and pigment molecules which fade most when exposed to UV, ambient light, etc., and are suitable for improving permanence of inkjet inks, including thermal inkjet ink, piezo inkjet ink, and the like. The lightfast additive comprises a molecule which is composed of three parts or moieties: A—X—B, where (a) moiety A is an aryl sulfonic acid or aryl carboxylic acid, either in acid form or salt form, with or without substituents (e.g., benzene sulfonic acid, naphthalene mono-sulfonic acid, naphthalene di-sulfonic acid, benzoic acid, benzene sulfonic acid sodium salt, and hydroxybenzenesulfonic acid sodium salt), that contributes to the water solubility and compatibility (molecular overlapping) with the dye molecule in the solid state; (b) moiety B is a triazine, benzotriazole, tetrazole, or benzimidazole, with or without substituents, that contributes to improvement of lightfastness of the dye; and (c) moiety X is a connector (—NR— or —O—) between A and B.
