    摘要: A method, system and article of manufacture to establish a virtual drive accessible to pre-boot and operating system runtime phases. A virtual drive is constructed from a physical storage device of a computer system during a pre-boot phase of the computer system. A virtual drive controller is initialized during the pre-boot phase to support the virtual drive. Information on the virtual drive is accessed using the virtual drive controller by firmware during the pre-boot phase. The information on the virtual drive is accessed using the virtual drive controller by an operating system (OS) of the computer system during an OS runtime phase, wherein the information is comprehensible by the firmware and the OS.

    摘要: Reducing memory fragmentation. Memory is allocated during a preboot phase of a computer system, wherein the memory is allocated based on a plurality of memory types. Fragmentation of memory is determined, wherein a fragment includes a contiguous block of memory of the same type. At least a portion of memory allocated to a firmware module is coalesced based on the plurality of memory types if the fragmentation is greater than a threshold. An operating system is booted by the computer system.

    摘要: A system and method to resume execution of a client system from a saved system state without executing a boot-up process. A data storage unit and the client system having volatile system memory are coupled to a network. Data stored on the data storage unit is received via the network and loaded into the volatile system memory of the client system. The data contains information for the client system to resume execution from the saved system state without executing a boot-up process after a power-off state. The client system is then capable of resuming operation from the saved system state.

    摘要: An embodiment of the present invention bridges event data from the pre-boot environment to the operating system runtime environment. Event logs are stored in a memory buffer during pre-boot. Prior to launching the operating system (OS), the event log is registered to a known memory location accessible to the OS. A preferred embodiment uses the extensible firmware interface (EFI) configuration table to store the event log. A globally unique identifier (GUID) may be used to identify the memory buffer location. Once accessible to the OS, the event data may be displayed using standard extensible Markup Language (XML) forms, or via any other desired method.

    摘要: A method and system to provide platform-based optimization routines by firmware of a computer system. During a pre-boot phase of a computer system, the firmware identifies one or more hardware devices, such as a central processing unit (CPU) or chipset, of a computer system. The firmware determines an optimized routine library for the one or more hardware devices from a set of optimized routine libraries. The firmware advertises the optimized routine library corresponding to the one or more hardware devices to the computer system for use by an operating system or application. In one embodiment, the firmware of the computer system operates in accordance with the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) framework standard.

A management mode of operation of a processing system is activated in response to a signal received via a network. A portion of code copied from a firmware unit into system memory of the processing system is executed during the management mode of operation to interact with at least one hardware entity of the processing system. A runtime monitor is further executed during the management mode of operation to determine information about the at least one hardware entity via executing the portion of code and to transmit the information over the network. Subsequently, the management mode of operation is deactivated.
