摘要: An implantable device is configured for placement in the eardrum to transmit an audio signal to a user. The device may be configured to improve transmission of an electromagnetic signal including light energy from an input assembly on a lateral side of eardrum to an output assembly positioned on a medial side of the eardrum, for example at least partially in the middle ear of the user. The output assembly may include a transducer or at least two electrodes configured to stimulate the cochlea, for example. The device may include an opening to transmit the light signal or an optic to transmit the light signal. Alternatively the device may be configured to support a transducer of the output assembly with the eardrum when the device is implanted in the eardrum, such that the eardrum vibrates in response to the signal electromagnetic signal. The electromagnetic signal may include light energy for a magnetic field.

摘要: A method of treating a mammal presenting with an otic infection attributable to a pathogenic bacteria is accomplished by passing a hollow shaft having a first and second end through the tympanum of the mammal. The first end is sufficient to pierce the tympanic membrane, but flexible enough such that it buckles under the force necessary to damage any surrounding tissues in the tympanic cavity. The first end of the hollow shaft, after it pierces the tympanic membrane, extends into the tympanic cavity to aspirate a volume of effluence contained therein. The aspirated effluence is expelled out the second end of the hollow shaft. A volume of medicament (less than the volume of effluence withdrawn) is then injected through the same hollow shaft and into the tympanic cavity to treat the infection.

摘要: Methods for operating diode lasers are provided. According to one method, the diode laser comprises a wavelength selection section, a gain section and a saturable absorber. The method comprises applying a hybrid-control signal comprising a hybrid-control DC bias to the saturable absorber, and applying a hybrid-driving signal comprising a hybrid-driving DC bias and a hybrid-driving AC bias to the gain section. The hybrid signals are selected and the diode laser is configured such that a relatively high hybrid-control DC bias corresponds to a relatively low average of the output power of the diode laser, and a relatively low hybrid-control DC bias corresponds to a relatively high average of the output power of the diode laser. The hybrid-driving DC bias is between a switch-on threshold of the diode laser and a switch-off threshold of the diode laser, and the hybrid-driving AC bias is periodic. The hybrid-driving AC bias has a peak-to-peak amplitude greater than the difference between the switch-on threshold and the switch-off threshold.
