The liquid composition contains fine particles reactive relative to the solvent and the coloring material in ink. The one-part fixative of the present invention comprises a polymer in a vehicle. The polymer is selected from the group consisting of vinyl-based polymers, condensation polymers, and copolymers thereof and the polymer has a glass transition temperature within a range of null50null C. to null100null C., a melting temperature within a range of 30null C. to 150null C., and a molecular weight (weight average basis) within a range of 3,000 to 100,000. The fixative is contained in a separate cartridge from the ink-jet ink print cartridge(s). The two-part fixative of the present invention comprises (1) a reactive monomer or oligomer in a vehicle, the reactive monomer or oligomer selected from the group consisting of iso-cyanates and epoxy-terminated oligomers, and (2) at least one second component selected from the group consisting of polyols, polyvinyl alcohols, and base catalysts. The reactive monomer or oligomer is contained in a separate cartridge from the ink-jet ink print cartridge(s), while the second component(s) is contained in at least one ink-jet ink print cartridge. The reactive monomer or oligomer reacts with the second component(s) on the print medium to form a polymer, which has a glass transition temperature within a range of null20null C. to null50null C. and a melting temperature within a range of 30null C. to 100null C. Disclosed are an ink jet recording method, which can produce, on recording media, good images possessing good lightfastness, waterfastness, rubbing resistance/scratch resistance, and gloss, and a reaction solution and an ink composition for use in the ink jet recording method. After printing of an ink composition, the application of a first liquid to form a coating can improve the waterfastness, rubbing resistance/scratch resistance and gloss of records. The incorporation of a cationic emulsion containing sites possessing ultraviolet absorbing activity and/or photostabilizing activity into the reaction solution can improve the lightfastness of records.

Alternatively, the process employs an ink Im containing a pigment and a dye mixed therein which requires no dispersant and includes the step of applying this mixed ink Im to a printing medium P followed by applying a treatment liquid S for making the ink Im insoluble. Consequently, high quality printing can be achieved.
