Abstract: The proposal is for an improved expansion device for a drum brake having an integrated readjustment unit having a readjusting screw which can be locked therein by a spring-loaded latching unit which, for a reliable readjustment function with a reduced level of force, provides for the latching unit to allow a defined idle rotation of the readjusting screw, which is defined structurally by a first stop acting in a first direction of revolution and a second stop acting in the opposite direction of revolution.

Abstract: An expanding device for actuating one of the brake shoes of a drum brake includes a body of revolution and transmission bodies actuated by the body of revolution via ball track ramps. A spacer body is located between two partial bodies of the body of revolution, the spacer body guided by an adjustment spring keeping the partial bodies at the respectively reached distance. The spacer body is screwed onto a pin on the first partial body. A readjustment nut ensures that, when the two partial bodies are pushed apart, the spacer body rotates on the pin and moves away from a supporting surface on a partition of the second partial body. Upon renewed actuation of the brakes, the readjustment nut is guided such that the spacer body bears against the second partial body), but takes up a different position on the pin, the position corresponding to the air clearance readjustment.

Abstract: The mechanically actuated brake (10) comprises a laterally movable sleeve housing (22) which is attached by slots (24) and connections (26) with the support plate (28). A mechanical actuator and adjuster mechanism (40) has parts (42, 48) received within a longitudinal through opening (27) of the housing (22), a first part (42) of the mechanism (40) abutting one brake shoe end (20) while a second part (48) of the mechanism (40) abuts the other brake shoe end (18). A lever (50) for service brake operation is attached pivotably by a connection pin (30) with the housing (22) and extends through a transverse through opening (29) of the housing (22). The lever (50) is received within a slot (49) of the second part (48) of the mechanism (40), and includes an actuating arm (57) which extends through the housing (22) and is engagable with an actuating arm ( 66) of a pawl (60) that actuates the adjuster portion of the mechanism (40). The pin connection (30) also mounts rotatably the pawl (60) to the housing (22). The pawl (60) includes a spring support flap (67) which receives one end of a spring (70) attached to the one brake shoe end (20). A return spring (80) extends between the connection (30) and another brake shoe end (18) in order to effect return of the associated brake shoe (12), to reduce the torque required to rotate a star wheel (44) of the mechanism (40), and to reduce the size of the spring (70) attached to the one brake shoe end (20).

Abstract: An automatic adjuster comprises a transmission member, suitably a crown wheel, and thrust assemblies, of which the effective lengths are adjustable to adjust the spacing between a pair of shoe-ends, and the crown wheel is coupled to a brake-applying cam through a lost-motion connection, and a clutch. In a brake-applying mode the transmission mechanism is operative to increase the effective lengths of the thrust assemblies after the lost-motion has been taken up and until a critical point is reached at which the clutch slips in one direction. An inhibit mechanism is incorporated for limiting movement of the crown wheel in the opposite brake release mode until any previous excess movement of the crown wheel in the brake-applying mode has been accommodated by slippage of the clutch in the opposite direction.

Abstract: The invention concerns a brake actuator with automatic adjustment incorporating a screw and nut actuator mechanism (32, 34) whose elongation is controlled by a screw and nut device with reversible pitch (44) and a unidirectional clutch (56) sensitive to the relative movement between the fixed body (20) and a control piston (24). The brake actuator incorporates an automatic device (68) momentarily disengaging the actuator mechanism (32, 34) when the rotational torque of the nut (32) becomes too great.
