A method and apparatus for controlling single or polyphase a.c. power controllers when controlling a.c. power controllers by means of phase angle control of semiconductor switches, the firing signals on the one hand must be long enough to guarantee a reliable firing and, on the other hand, be short enough to prevent an overloading of ignition amplifiers. According to the invention, therefore the use of firing signals with variable temporal lengths is provided, which end at least approximately at the reestablishment of the current flowing in the phase that has been fired. Moreover, devices for implementing the method are specified.

A new method and apparatus for controlling the conversion of AC electrical energy into DC electrical energy. A microprocessor control system is operatively connected to an AC source and to a motor/regenerative switching bridge network. A control signal is operatively coupled to the microprocessor to selectively adjust the DC output voltage. The microprocessor monitors the control voltage, calculates the timing of gating signals and generates gating pulses to the bridge networks. The microprocessor also senses the phase rotation and the line frequency of the AC source and factors those parameters into account when determining gate pulse output pattern and timing.

Power delivered to a load by a three-phase supply is controlled by six thyristors which are controlled by a control signal generator comprising a programmed microcomputer (2), a zero-crossover detector (3), a clock pulse generator (6) and a counter (7) so that the thyristor conduction angles are determined by a digital signal applied to an input (17) of the microcomputer. In order to obtain a fast response to changes in the supply frequency and to take into account any unbalance between the supply phases, the microcomputer repeatedly measures the actual length of each nominally 60.degree. portion of a complete period of the supply by starting the counter at a predetermined point within each portion, the counter subsequently being stopped by the output of the detector when the next zero-crossover occurs and then being read by the microcomputer. The microcomputer keeps a running record of the six results most recently obtained and generates the control signals at a predetermined time (determined by the signal at its input 17) prior to the instant at which each subsequent zero-crossover is expected to occur on the basis of when a zero-crossover has already occurred and the current content of the record.

An apparatus for controlling an inverter main circuit has a memory circuit for storing digital control signals which correspond to 180.degree./n portions of output voltage waveforms of the inverter main circuit, where n is an integer. The memory circuit has a plurality of memory areas. One of the memory areas is designated by a digital signal supplied from a speed setting circuit. And the addresses of any memory area thus designated are designated by output signals of an up-down counter, one after another in ascending order of their serial numbers (forward direction) and in descending order of their serial numbers (backward direction). As they are designated, the memory regions corresponding to addresses supplies control signals. Every time the addressing direction is changed, the up-down counter generates a clock signal to a converter circuit which has 2n output terminals. In response to the clock signal supplied from the up-down counter, the converter circuit supplies signals to a waveform synthesizer circuit, one after another via the 2n output terminals. According to the signals from the converter circuit the waveform synthesizer circuit supplies to the inverter main circuit the control data in a predetermined order.

A digital control unit for a static converter contains a binary-coded counter which counts the pulses of an oscillator. The counter outputs are connected to the address inputs of a function memory in which sawtooth or ramp functions are stored. The numbers read out of the function memory are compared in a comparator, with a number determining the drive of the static converter. The result of the comparison and pulses on selected outputs of the counter are linked, in a logic circuit, to form firing pulses for the static converter. The invention is suitable for control units for static converters, in particular for AC control elements and inverters. All expense of adjusting, and all compensation of drift errors is obviated.

A circuit for controlling the rendering conductive of the controlled rectifiers of a power conversion unit to thereby control the power supplied to a load from a source of alternating current voltage employs a single means to sense a prescribed phase relationship between adjacent phase to neutral voltages of the source which means is utilized to develop a digital count representing a time-phase relationship with respect to the point determined. The digital count thus developed is supplied to a memory system to address that system and based upon the contents of the locations within the memory system thus addressed there is provided an output which determines the time and firing sequence of the rectifiers of the power conversion system. This output is then utilized to generate suitable signals which are applied to the rectifiers of the power conversion system to thereby control the power supplied to the load.
