A plasticating screw and method of plasticating without thermal degradation problems. Said screw having a metering section with a helical flight disposed within and cooperating with the innerwall of a heated barrel. In particular, solid resinous material is introduced to a helical valley extending between said flight. The resinous material is heated and plasticized by said apparatus while being advanced along a helical path towards an outlet opening by the rotation of said screw. The bottom surface of the helical valley in said metering section having a plurality of geometrically shaped surfaces in side-by-side relation with at least two of said shaped surfaces being sloped. During operation, the level differential between the shaped surfaces induces a continuous tumbling, variable shear and mixing action upon the molten resin as the molten resin in the metering section flows along the helical path.

An apparatus and method for controlling thermoplastic mixing in a plastic extrusion machines used for injection molding, blow molding or other reciprocating molding process. The plastic extruder having a rotating helical screw within a cylindrical shell with an automatic shut-off and mixing valve secured to the helical screw at the downstream end of the screw. The automatic shut-off and mixing valve includes a unitary valve body with a poppet. A plurality of mixing groove pairs are arranged extending substantially longitudinally on the surface of the valve body. Select angular bores extend from the groove pairs to the poppet. The poppet is axially movable within and rotatable relative the valve body. The poppet has an axial stem extending into a longitudinal axial bore within the valve body. An elastic means is positioned on the rearward end of the poppet maintaining the valve in a normally closed position against a seating surface of the valve body when there is no rotation of the helical screw.

A screw-type resin injection apparatus for injection molding which includes a cylinder element having a cylinder chamber for receiving resin therein, and having, at an end portion, a nozzle for injecting the resin. A screw element is arranged within the cylinder chamber in a manner allowing rotation and axial movement. A rotary drive shaft is connected to the screw element telescopically so as to be capable of transmitting a torque. The rotary drive shaft is rotatively driven by a motor. A fluid pressure cylinder unit is arranged laterally of the cylinder element in parallel relation thereto. The fluid pressure cylinder unit is rotatably engaged with the screw element to drive the screw axially. Preferably, the screw element is provided with a mixing screw portion which has a screw groove small in pitch and large in lead angle and an axial groove extending axially.

An injecting unit for use in an injection molding machine comprises an arrangement for locking an axially movable plasticizing cylinder to a carrying block and for locking a feed screw to a motor for-rotating the feed screw, which is adapted to be coupled to the motor in that the feed screw is inserted into a profiled coupling section of the motor. The feed screw is axially displaceable for injecting the plastic material. The plasticizing cylinder is adapted to be locked at a stop of the carrying block by screw threads, which are provided on the plasticizing cylinder and are centered on the longitudinal axis of the cylinder, and a nut, which is screwed on the screw threads and rotatable by a drive engaging the periphery of the nut. When the plasticizing cylinder has thus been locked, the feed screw is locked to the feed screw motor. As a result, the plasticizing cylinder and the feed screw can reliably be locked and unlocked by simple arrangement, which can be automatically controlled.

A screw head is composed of a cone portion, a tapered portion formed behind the cone portion and a narrow portion formed behind the tapered portion. A counter-flow stopper ring is provided around the narrow portion so that an annular resin passage is formed between the counter-flow stopper ring and the narrow portion. The tapered portion of the screw head has a plurality of circumferentially spaced grooves. The sectional area of each groove decreases from the inner circumference toward the outer circumference of the tapered portion. The grooves are so formed that the resin flowing through the grooves creates a force which pushes the counter-flow stopper ring backward, the ring being moved forward by forward flow of resin caused during backward movement of the screw. Thus, the grooves help maintain a gap between the counter-flow stopper ring and the screw head.

Melt fabrication, without precompounding, of a composition comprising a thermoplastic resin, an acid containing ethylene copolymer and a polymeric grafting agent, is provided by (1) bringing the molten components of the composition together for the first time, (2) intermittently shearing the components, preferably in an injection molding machine or a blow molding machine having a screw with a shearing section, and (3) intermittently fabricating in one-step the sheared molten composition into articles of pre-determined shape. The thermoplastic resin is less than 50 volume percent and is at least one continuous phase in the composition. The process is improved by increasing back pressure on the screw used in the injection molding machine, to extend the screw rotation and shear time.

An apparatus for locking a horizontal plasticizing cylinder to the carrying block of the injecting unit of an injection molding machine having two cylinder-locking sliders which are disposed on opposite sides of the axis of said cylinder and are radially movable by means of hydraulic cylinders. In a locking position, the sliders extend in diametrically opposite recesses of the plasticizing cylinder. A shaft for driving the feed screw of the plasticizing unit has a coupling section which is formed with a radial guide groove, in which a screw-locking slider is radially displaceably mounted, the screw-locking slider being non-rotatably connected to the shaft. A coupling bridge is secured to the upper one of the cylinder-locking sliders. When the feed screw is in a desired angular position said coupling bridge is coupled to the screw-locking slider so that one cylinder-locking slider and the screw-locking slider are simultaneously moved to their locking positions.

A screw plastifying and conveying device includes a screw (5) which has a pull-in zone (I) of constant pitch volume (V.sub.0), a first compression zone (II), and adjacent thereto, i.e. in the injection side, a second compression zone (III). The compression ratio (V.sub.1 :V.sub.0) of the second compression zone (III) is between 1:1.0 and 1.2, while that of the first compression zone is between 1:1.6 and 1:4. This makes it possible, by underdosing, to reduce the melt volume in the second compression zone, thereby achieving stable conveying action over a wide operating range. Molded parts with minimal internal tensions and e.g. also molded parts of glass-clear material with unobjectionable optical properties can thus be produced.
