The process and apparatus of our invention reduces the breakdown quota of stopping devices in a spinning or twisting machine which stop the roving, e.g. when a roving break occurs. A simulated signal for "Yarn Running" is conductable to a stopping device for test purposes and/or the yarn break sensing device can be disconnected from the stopping device and from time to time a connecting signal is produced which reconnects the yarn break device to the associated stop device.

A machine for spinning or twisting yarn comprises a plurality of similar operating units, groups of which are each drivable by a tangential drive belt and a drive having a motor. Each of the tangential drive belts is connected with a drive belt performance observation mechanism, which shuts off the spinning or twisting machine, when the machine senses a deviation from the normal operation of the drive belt. The drive belt performance observation mechanism may also transmit the signal it produces either to a display device or to a sound producing device, so that the machine operator can take further action.

A guard is provided for a take-up shaft of an open-end yarn spinning machine. The shaft rotates about a first axis and cooperates with a cot (a small rubber wheel) which is rotatable about a second axis parallel to the first axis. The guard comprises a tubular body member, preferably circular in cross-section, having a central axis and first and second ends spaced from each other along the central axis. A slot is formed in the body, and the body surrounds the shaft. The body is concentric with the shaft and the slot is disposed beneath the shaft. A cut-out is formed adjacent, but spaced from, the first end of the shaft, and the cot operatively engages the shaft through the cut-out. The slot and cut-out preferably interconnect. A mounting bracket is joined to the body member at the second end of the body member preferably comprises a Y-shaped bracket having a stem integral with the body member and branches with openings for receipt of fasteners. The fasteners are otherwise operative components of the spinning machine, and the fasteners and bracket mount the tubular body member so that it is stationary with respect to the shaft. The body member preferably is formed of a flexible plastic so that the portions thereof defining the slot may be bent away from each other, and the body member easily disposed in a position surrounding the shaft, although it may also be of a rigid metal.

Apparatus and method for facilitating maintenance of a data system gathering information regarding the operating conditions of ring spinning machines in a textile mill wherein at least one traveling unit, supported for travel along a predetermined path for traversing one or more ring spinning machines, carries detectors for monitoring ends of strand material normally being formed by traversed machines, additional sensors are provided on each machine for signalling operating characteristics of the machines, and processors operatively communicating with the sensors and responsive to signals from the sensors determines from such signals the operating conditions of respective ones of the machines. In accordance with this invention, malfunctions of defined portions of the data system are identified and an output display of information characteristic of the nature and machine location of malfunctions is generated.
