摘要: A pressure compensated hydrophone for measuring dynamic pressures is disclosed. The hydrophone includes a compliant hollow mandrel with a single optical fiber coiled around at least a portion of the mandrel. The mandrel further includes at least one pressure relief valve for compensating for changes in hydrostatic pressure. The pressure relief valve includes a micro-hole, which allows hydrostatic pressures or low frequency pressure events to couple into the interior of the mandrel to provide compensation against such pressure. Higher frequencies pressure events of interest do not couple through the micro-hole and therefore only act only on the exterior of the mandrel, allowing for their detection. Because (quasi) hydrostatic events are compensated for, the mandrel may be made particularly compliant, rendering the singular fiber optic coil particularly sensitive to the detection of the higher frequency signals of interest.

摘要: A termination assembly for use in an optical hydrophone module, comprising a module oil seal and an optical fiber seal. The termination assembly is used at the ends of modules and provides a means for filling individual modules with fill fluid. A module oil seal comprises a cylindrical wall defining a cavity, with one end substantially closed and the other end open. An annular face plate on the open end makes a seal dividing a coupling and a clevis. A check valve is mounted to an orifice that passes through the substantially closed end of the module oil seal. Optical fibers pass through the substantially closed end and the optical fiber seal is provided around the optical fiber that passes therethrough. The fiber seal fits snugly in a module oil seal opening. Both components serve to provide a seal that can withstand high pressures and maintain optical fiber integrity.

摘要: A receiving beam is formed using 60 elements arranged in a 90° sector area of a cylindrical receiving array. Receiving beam 0 is formed with elements 0-59 divided into two (front and rear) groups. Specifically, the elements 0-59 are divided into rear group 1 (elements 0-8, 51-59) and front group 2 (elements 9-50) in the beam direction, and the receiving beam is formed by using sample data obtained from the transducer elements 0-8, 51-59 of group 1 in a current scanning cycle as well as sample data obtained from the transducer elements 9-50 of group 2 in a preceding scanning cycle. This approach makes it possible to form the receiving beam such that incoming waves of a short-pulse signal would simultaneously hit the relevant transducer elements of the receiving array and thereby improve directivity and sensitivity of the receiving beam for the reception of short-pulse waves.

摘要: An assembly module provides well-organized optical fiber component attachment features and convenient fiber routing areas for assembling and containing a fiber optic device such a telemetry module. The module comprises a first substrate having a first side and a second side. The first side includes a plurality of sidewalls and a recessed floor surface bounded by the sidewalls. Some of the sidewalls have a cavities formed therein. A plurality of channels extend from the ends of the cavities. A plurality of projections extend from the sidewalls over selected portions of the floor surface such that a lower edge of each projection is spaced apart from the floor surface. Optical fiber components (couplers, splices, etc.) may be mounted in the cavities, and optical fibers are routed to and from the optical fiber components on regions between the sidewalls and through the channels. The optical fibers are placed in the spaces between the projections and the floor surface to retain the optical fibers in selected positions. The assembly module provides for preasembled, pretested, mass produced, fiber optic coupler and excess fiber subassemblies and reduces the potential for component and fiber damage during manufacturing and allows for, but reduces the need for, the potential rework and repair associated with errors and failures during array assembly, thereby reducing manufacturing cost.

摘要: A device for transmitting acoustically toward the bottom of the sea includes an arrangement of a cable 404 containing vertically suspended electro-acoustic transducers 403 wherein each of said transducers are assigned to a frequency of the pulse spectrum to be emitted. The transducers are attached to the cable at such positions whereby the wave transmitted toward the sea floor is in phase with the reflective wave on the surface of the sea The superimposition of different elementary signals constitutes a single strong pulse. The device replaces air gun devices for oil exploration.
