The spring support system uses rigid support members that extend across the seating area and are attached to a frame of the furniture. Springs are attached to the support members above notches in the support members. The notches allow portions of the springs to be compressed into the notches during compression of the seating area. The springs can be attached to the support members by threading the lowermost convolution of the spring through holes on both sides of the notch or by positioning the lower most convolution of the spring in grooves on either side of the notch. A noise abatement layer may be positioned between the springs and the notches to prevent direct contact between the springs and notches during compression or decompression of the springs.

An innerspring structure for a mattress comprises a plurality of outer coils extending generally parallel with each other to collectively form top and bottom face surfaces of the innerspring structure. One or more of the outer coils has an inner coil of preferably similar shape positioned generally coaxially with the respective outer coil. In one embodiment, a helical lacing wire wraps together adjacent end turns of the inner and outer coaxially aligned coils to form reinforced coil units in an area of the innerspring structure to increase the firmness of an area of the mattress utilizing the invention. Helical lacing wire connects the coils of the structure together and connects the end turns of peripheral coils to a border wire surrounding the periphery of the structures at the top and bottom face surfaces. In another embodiment of the invention, the structure comprises a row of inner coils and a row of outer coils, each formed from a single continuous piece of wire such that adjacent coils of the row are interconnected by interconnection segments. The rows of coils are positioned together so that the inner coils are coaxial with the outer coils to form reinforced coil unit.

A spring loaded locking system for a box spring assembly having a generally rectangular frame, a plurality of spring modules and a grid type wire support deck disposed a predetermined distance above the frame. The locking system provides an interference fit which secures the spring modules to the support deck. Each spring has a pair of outwardly open V-shaped sections integrally formed with the upper portion of the spring. The vertices of the V-shaped sections commonly contact one wire of the support deck. A pair of legs extends from each vertex and straddle the common wire and either cross one of a pair of parallel brace wires of the support deck. The V-shaped sections are biased apart from each other by the shape of the upper portion of the spring module itself. The interaction between the vertices and the common wire, between the legs and the brace wires, and the outward bias of the upper portion of the spring module provides an interference lock fit which secures the support deck to the spring module.

Adjacent coil springs are joined together at their end spirals along abutting legs by helical connecting springs. To arrange the springs at tight angles in rows and columns, a length of one leg is greater than the length of another leg and all the coil springs are oriented in the same direction, except along a edge region of the spring core.
