Abstract: A digital printing press for printing security documents is provided. The digital printing press comprises: a first digital print head, the first digital printhead comprising a first array of print nozzles having a first nozzle diameter; a second digital print head, the second digital print head comprising a second array of print nozzles having a second nozzle diameter different from the first nozzle diameter; optionally, an offset printing unit, the offset printing unit comprising one or more offset printing surfaces, wherein the offset printing unit is adapted to transport a print area of the one or more offset printing surfaces sequentially past each of the first and second digital print heads, and subsequently to transfer print received from the first and second digital print heads to a security document substrate; a transport system adapted to transport a security document substrate along a transport path through the digital printing press, wherein either the transport path takes the security document sequentially past each of the first and second digital print heads in a feed direction, or the transport path takes the security document substrate past the offset printing unit, if provided, in a feed direction; a controller adapted to control both the first and second digital print heads to execute a set of printing instructions so as to print on a security document substrate transported past the first and second digital print heads by the transport system or to print on the print area of the one or more offset printing surfaces transported past the first and second digital print heads by the offset printing unit (and to transfer the print received on the print area of the offset printing to the security document substrate), the set of printing instructions including printing instructions at a first resolution for the first digital print head for printing a first print working and printing instructions at a second resolution different from the first resolution for the second digital print head for printing a second print working; wherein the first digital print head is configured to print at the first resolution and the second digital print head is configured to print at the second resolution, and wherein the first and second digital print heads are configured or controlled by the controller to remain static relative to the transport path or offset printing unit while the first and second digital print heads execute the respective printing instructions.

Abstract: A security element including a first layer having a first surface, an array of image regions across the surface, each including at least first and second sub-regions, a first array of plasmonic nanostructures in or on the surface across the first sub-regions, defining in each a corresponding portion of a first image, a second array across the second sub-regions, defining in each a corresponding portion of a second image; wherein each sub-region has a respective average inclination and the average inclinations of the first sub-regions are such that the first image is displayed at least at a first viewing angle and those of the second sub-regions are such that the second image is displayed at least at a second viewing angle different from the first and the second image is substantially not or only partially displayed at least at the first angle. Also, a method of manufacturing the security element.

Abstract: A security device includes a substrate and a photoluminescent image on or in the substrate. The image includes at least two different visible light emitting photoluminescent quantum dot compositions, each arranged according to different respective photoluminescent sub-images. The at least two different visible light emitting photoluminescent quantum dot compositions have different emission spectra from one another, and the same or different excitation spectra. The at least two different visible light emitting photoluminescent quantum dot compositions emit different respective visible colours from one another when excited. The respective photoluminescent sub-images are configured such that the photoluminescent image formed by the combination of the respective photoluminescent sub-images is multi-coloured, emitting different visible colours in different laterally offset parts thereof upon excitation of the at least two different visible light emitting photoluminescent quantum dot compositions. At least a portion of the photoluminescent image overlaps an at least semi-transparent region of the substrate.

Abstract: A method of forming a polymer substrate for a security sheet includes: providing first and second overlapping polymer layers each providing outwardly facing surfaces, and a colour shifting element positioned between the first and second polymer layers adapted to provide a first optical effect to a viewer, wherein the first polymer layer includes a region substantially transparent to visible light such that the colour shifting element is viewable through the first polymer layer, and; joining together the first and second polymer layers in order to generate a polymer substrate wherein, during the joining step, a surface relief is formed in the outwardly facing surface of the first layer, the surface relief being adapted to interact with light from the colour shifting element in order to modify the first optical effect to provide a second optical effect different from the first optical effect.

Abstract: A method of forming a security device includes selectively providing a high refractive index (HRI) layer to a first outwardly facing surface of a security device substrate, the HRI layer having a substantially transparent host material and particles having a dimension along at least one axis less than 200 nm, such that they are substantially non-scattering to visible light and the HRI layer is substantially transparent to visible light, and wherein; the particles have a refractive index of at least 1.8 and are present within the host material in a proportion such that the resultant refractive index of the HRI layer is at least 1.6. A corresponding security device, as well as security articles and security documents, are also disclosed.

The image elements-array is configured so the distance in the second-direction of each image slice from the centre line of an optical footprint in the image slice changes along the first-direction.

Abstract: A security device is provided including a first pattern of elements and a second, overlapping, pattern of elements spaced by a transparent layer, the first and second patterns in combination obstructing the passage of light transmitted to a viewer through the device to a varying degree depending on the viewing position. The first and second patterns of elements are configured such that a first region of the device exhibits a maximum change in the degree of obstruction when the device is tilted relative to the viewer about a first tilt axis, and a second region of the device exhibits a maximum change in the degree of obstruction when the device is tilted relative to the viewer about a second tilt axis which is not parallel to the first tilt axis.
