Abstract: A spillway gate system for use as a navigation dam in which individual spillway gates may be serviced. The spillway gate system comprising a spillway including abutments at opposite ends thereof; wherein at least one of the abutments includes a cavity therein having a bottom surface; a removable bulkhead covering the cavity in the abutment; a plurality of water control gates hinged to the spillway; a service crane movable along the spillway and including a dewatering caisson; and a seal for sealing the caisson to the gates and to the bottom surface of the cavity.

Abstract: Several panels are pivotably mounted on top of a dam spillway for movement by air pressure provided through bladders downstream of these panels. The bladders are made from an elastomeric sheet that is folded so that edge portions overlap one another. A clamping bar secures these overlapping portions to the dam spillway. The sheet is also secured to the panel and defines the pivot or hinge joint for the panel. Abutments or stops on the clamping bar engage a strap, that also secures the bladder to the panel, so that the panel will not move upwardly beyond a limit position. An air operating system is disclosed for moving the panels in response to changes in the height or head of water upstream of the panels.

Abstract: A crest gate for a dam spillway has a plurality of pivotably mounted panels provided end-to-end across the spillway structure and each hinge joint is a flexible neoprene strip. Strips are also provided between adjacent panels for sealing the spaces between panels. These panels are raised by inflatable elongated tubular bladders secured to the spillway by a harness. The hinge strip and harness are secured in place by common clamping means.

Abstract: A crest gate has movable panels controlled in position by inflatable bladders. Air pressure to the bladders or from the bladders is provided to a control system that automatically regulates panel position. Air is bubbled out of a line that is normally below the water level behind the dam and crest gate panels. An actuator assembly is coupled to a valve for selectively venting the bladders. An elastomeric tire is used to create a positioning effect on the valve such that the control system maintains a precise water level. The gate configuration is improved to resist higher loads.

Abstract: A hydromotive machine apparatus comprises a bulkhead assembly comprised of an array of water tubes connected to each other with their longitudinal axes in parallel to provide the bulkhead as a relatively light and strong, truss-like integral unit providing a plurality of water flow paths through it. A plurality of submersible hydraulic electromotive machines, which may be generators and/or pumps, is mounted on the bulkhead assembly with runners of the machines disposed within respective water flow paths provided by the water tubes. The apparatus may include a trash screen mounted thereon, and/or valves associated with the water tubes to control the flow of water therethrough. The apparatus may be installed in a hydroelectic power installation by assembling it at a site remote from the water course operating site, for example, at an elevated position above the water level, and moving the apparatus, or at least the bulkhead assembly, as a unit to a submerged, operating position within a water course or passageway.

Abstract: A control apparatus responsive to the difference between liquid levels, and a method of controlling a liquid flow regulator by use of the apparatus is disclosed. The control apparatus may comprise a transducer responsive to the back-pressure maintained in a bubbler system including a pair of interconnected gas bubblers, one positioned upstream and one downstream of a flow restriction, such as a trash screen protecting the inlet to a hydroelectric turbine. The mouth of the downstream bubbler is positioned at a pre-selected elevation below that of the mouth of the upstream bubbler so that the pressure head of water at the mouth of the upstream bubbler sets the system back-pressure. When the downstream water level drops sufficiently below that of the upstream water level, the reduced water pressure head at the mouth of the downstream bubbler sets the system back-pressure. A flow regulator, such as a turbine wicket gate, is operated in response to the control apparatus.

Abstract: A hydroelectric generator is provided with a retractable runner and, optionally, with a retractable distributor. This is accomplished by mounting the runner on a runner shaft which is axially movable in order to permit selective retraction and extension of the runner exteriorly of the generator housing. In this way, the runner may be selectively withdrawn from the inlet to its associated draft tube in order to clear the inlet and increase its water flow rate capacity during periods of flood or excessive high water.
