摘要： An apparatus for forming an upper edge of a paperboard container includes a pocket including a shell having a cavity with a mouth configured to receive the container along an axis such that the rim extends beyond the mouth. A workstation includes a forming member having a first forming surface which is actuatable toward the axis from a retracted position spaced from the rim to an extended position lying adjacent an upper end of the rim, and a forming segment having a second forming surface which is actuatable along the axis and the forming member in response to axial movement thereof such that the second forming surface is positioned spaced from a lower end of the rim. The second forming surface is actuatable along the axis towards the first forming surface to form the rim therebetween.

摘要： A method for forming an overwrap container includes the steps of a) providing a base container having a first side seam on a side wall that extends along a longitudinal axis to define an internal volume, and a bottom secured to the side wall; b) providing the side wall of the base container with connecting elements on an outer periphery of the side wall; c) providing an overwrap having a second side seam over the side wall of the base container such that the overwrap is joined in spaced apart relationship by the connecting elements to the side wall of the base container; d) clamping the overwrap to the base container along the second side seam to form a first compressed area; e) clamping the overwrap to the base container in an area 180° removed from the second side seam to form a second compressed area: and f) reforming the second compressed area to define an overwrap container having a substantially uniform spacing and air gap between the base container and the overwrap except in the first compressed area.

摘要： A workstation for use with a turret type cup making machine is disclosed. The workstation is designed for sealing and finishing the bottom regions of paperboard style cups. A finishing wheel is mounted to a pair of nested housings that are configured to move the finishing wheel in a radially outward direction when one housing is rotated with respect to the other. Thus, the finishing wheel is moved longitudinally into the recessed bottom of a cup and then one housing is rotated with respect to the other forcing the finishing wheel radially outwardly until it contacts the bottom of the cup including portions of the sidewall blank and the bottom blank. This radial movement squeezes the cup bottom between the finishing wheel and an annular abutment wall. Meanwhile, the housings and finishing wheel are rotated together to drive the finishing wheel about the perimeter of the cup bottom to squeeze and seal the sidewall blank to the bottom blank.

The workstation includes a rotatable roller assembly and a rotationally stationary guide member which cooperate to curl the sidewall blank with respect to the bottom blank. The rollers and guide member have adjacent surfaces designed to curl the bottom edge of a sidewall blank around a lip of the bottom blank and back into the recessed area at the bottom of the container.

摘要： A machine for making cups of thermoplastic coated paper, the machine including a frame or housing having a turret rotatably mounted on the frame, a number of work stations mounted on the frame in an equally spaced relation around the turret, a number of mandrels corresponding to the number of work stations mounted on the turret and a curling die mounted on the turret in radial alignment with each of the mandrels. The turret being rotated intermittently to align the mandrels sequentially with the work stations, the work stations being movable radially inwardly into a working relation with each mandrel, the mandrels being moved radially inwardly simultaneously with the work stations to form a tucked curl on the top edge of the cup.

摘要： A bottom blank maker workstation for a cup making machine is disclosed. The cup making machine is of the type having a rotating turret and a plurality of mandrels arranged to interact with a plurality of workstations. The turret moves each mandrel in a stepwise fashion through the plurality of workstations where a bottom blank and a sidewall blank are formed and attached to one another to create a container. The workstation includes a reciprocable punch and draw that cooperate with an abutment surface and a series of protrusions to impress the lip of the bottom blank with a series of indentations. The indentations promote a better seal to the sidewall blank.
