A resilient vehicle wheel, particularly for off-the-road vehicles, comprises a generally cylindrical tread wall of resilient material having circumferentially-spaced corrugations, an inner hub section, and a pair of inwardly-dished end walls of resilient material joining respective ends of the tread wall with the hub section. The end walls have angularly-spaced corrugations joining the corrugations of the tread wall and extending inwardly toward the hub section. Preferably the ridges of the end wall corrugations join the valleys of the tread wall corrugations, and vice versa, and the end wall valleys extend to a radius equal to, and advantageously greater than, the radius of the innermost portions of the tread wall valleys at respective ends of the wheel. The valleys of the end wall corrugations advantageously have respective series of alternate deeper and shallower portions spaced therealong, e.g., depressions. The resilient end walls and tread wall provide at least a major portion of the support for a load, and desirably the interior of the wheel is at atmospheric pressure.

A single propeller mounted toward the front of the vehicle provides both propulsion and air cushion. Two point steering is provided by front and rear steering vanes with air channels on each side which direct a portion of the downstream flow of air, under the control of the front vanes, to the rear vanes. To reduce forward thrust without reducing engine power, collapsible airbrakes are mounted on the outer walls of the air channels and in their collapsed position form a part thereof. The airbrakes include flexible sheets which in their extended positions, form concave arcuate surfaces extending across respective air channels and outside thereof to intercept downstream flow of air and divert it outwardly of the vehicle.

An air-cushion vehicle has a body structure including a rigid platform, and a shock absorber section of semi-rigid selfsupporting resilient material fixedly attached around the periphery of the rigid platform with the lower surface of the shock absorber section extending outwardly and downwardly below the rigid platform. A thin skirt of tough flexible material is united with the shock absorber section and extends downwardly from the peripheral region thereof. The skirt has integral mounting skirt members which are united with the outer peripheral surface and lower surface of the shock absorber section, and the shock absorber section extends beneath the rigid platform in overlapping relationship with the overlapping surfaces inclined outwardly and upwardly from the horizontal. At the front, the lower portion of the shock absorber section slopes upwardly and forwardly. The rigid platform, shock absorber section and skirt comprise a plenum chamber to which air pressure is supplied.

This invention relates to a flexible structure for defining at least part of the periphery of a plenum chamber of an air cushion vehicle. The structure includes two sidewalls defining an opentop channel adapted to receive fluid under pressure from a pressure supply source, a closable fluid passage is defined along the base of the channel and a lip or flap forming a continuation of the lower edge of one of the sidewalls defines a valve member engageable with a reaction surface over which the vehicle is positioned to regulate escape of air from the plenum chamber beneath the flexible structure. The arrangement is such that the fluid pressure within the channel is maintained substantially equal to that within the plenum chamber.
