The tunnel includes tunnel edges to contain the downward air flow under the main hull for surface lubrication. The vehicle further includes a rear portion with horizontal and vertical stabilizers to provide air-craft like behavior.

Three aspects are disclosed of an airstream control system for a hovercraft that includes a platform and a lift gas chamber beneath the platform. Firstly, the system includes an impeller for receiving air at an inlet and discharging pressurized air at an outlet as an airstream. The impeller is positioned above an orifice of the lift gas chamber. The impeller is supported along a first axis transverse to the airstream and about which the impeller is rotatable by a first axis frame that is rotatable about a pair of first axis supports fixed to the platform. The impeller is further supported along a second axis transverse to the airstream and about which the impeller is rotatable by a second axis frame that is attached to the first axis frame and that comprises a first arm supporting a first point of the impeller and extending upstream of the impeller. A first channel arrangement fixed to the platform can receive the first arm of the second axis frame so as to allow a higher degree of tilting of a main axis of the impeller from vertically downward than in the absence of the first channel arrangement. Secondly, the system may include an arrangement to substantially seal the orifice or the lift gas chamber downstream of the impeller from upward flow of air. Thirdly, the system may include a stator positioned downstream of the impeller to prevent various airflow problems when the impeller is titled at 90 degrees from vertically downward.

Two wheels of different modes are provided which add guidance capabilities to air cushioned vehicles. A tractor utilizes the wheel of the first mode, a wheel mounted upright upon a hollow tubular hub, being a half-torus. A trailer utilizes the wheel of the second mode, a wheel mounted upright upon a sphere which is cut off at the base to allow for ample platform clearance. Both vehicles are air cushioned, enabling them to hover above a support surface. Steering is affected by directing the tractor vehicle with the aid of a novel curved gear series on the inside rim of the wheel of the first mode. Twisting action upon the rim and wheel resulting from stress created between the steering sprocket and a drive sprocket, being synchronized when normal by a timing belt. The steering sprocket is effected by operator control and encounters the curved portions of the special gear teeth, thereby causing the tractor to turn. The wheels of both modes can be tilted by the operator's actions. Pressure differences in opposite chambers formed between the hub structures of the wheels and the outer shells at the sides of both wheels occur as fluid pressure is released from valves situated at the sides of both wheels in greater proportion on one side or the other.

A propulsion air stream deflecting apparatus for an air cushion vehicle having a hull, an air duct mounted on the hull and a propeller fan, includes a plurality of rudders, each mounted on the hull adjacent to the rear open end of the duct for pivotal movement about a vertical axis. The rudders are adapted to close the rear open end of the air duct. A rudder control mechanism is operatively connected to the rudders for controlling the pivotal movement of the rudders to selectively provide a propulsion thrust and a steering thrust to the hull and to provide a closed position in which the rear open end of the air duct is closed by the rudders. A flap is pivotably mounted at the rear end thereof to the duct such that the flap closes an opening, formed at the rear end of the air duct, at a closed position thereof where the inner face of the flap is substantially flush with the inner surface of the air duct. The flap turns outwardly to open the opening due to an increase in pressure in the duct in the closed position of the rudders, for deflecting the air stream, passing out the opening, forwards to provide a forward thrust to the hull for braking, stopping or rearwardly moving the hull. A flap urging spring urges the flap to close the opening.

Operating power is simultaneously transmitted from the main engine to the fan device and to a hydraulic drive system connected to drive the traction wheel device. The ratio of power distribution from the main engine to the fan device and to the traction wheel device is arranged to be regulated by altering the power consumption characteristics of either or both of the fan device and the traction wheel device.

This invention relates to air-cushion vehicles and to propulsion and steering apparatus for such vehicles which comprises means for generating and regulating a lateral control force and means for controlling yaw. As described, an air-cushion vehicle has two overhead propellers arranged at the rear of the vehicle symmetrically with respect to its longitudinal axis. The axes of the propellers form an acute angle with said longitudinal axis and converge at a point on the vertical axis through the centre of gravity of the vehicle.
