    摘要: The method of handling an empty beverage container having a bottom end and a mouth region and includes moving the container, from a return vending machine inlet, in a direction towards an outlet thereof. Through use of the method there is detected by means of a video camera the container when moved in a lying posture into or past a detection zone of the video camera and the manner by which the container is inserted at said inlet. Further, there is determined whether the container is moved into the detection zone bottom end first or mouth region end first. If the container is delivered into the detection zone with its bottom end first, the container is transported to said outlet. If, however, the container is delivered into the detection zone with its mouth region end first, then the container is caused to be returned to the inlet.

This means is connected to a processor or the like adapted for recognition, based on a camera-recorded image, of special features related to the container. To be able to use a standard type camera with limited resolution, the imaging of the container is carried out via an assembly of mirror faces (5, 6, 7, 8), which in pairs are arranged relative to one another in such manner that two areas along the longitudinal direction of the container (3) are imaged simultaneously by the camera (1). The mirror faces in respective pairs face each other and are positioned on the same side of the optical axis of the camera (1), with one of the mirror faces (5, 7) adjacent to the optical axis, and during the imaging process the camera is directed towards the mirror faces adjacent to the optical axis, in which the two areas of the container are shown as a respective mirror image in the respective mirror face.

The system includes a laser scanning engine which produces a three-dimensional laser scanning pattern having unique geometrical characteristics over a predefined scanning region, within which each container is rotated. Owing to its unique geometry, the laser scanning pattern facilitates reading of bar code symbols printed on arbitrary container surfaces while rotated within the predefined scanning region. As a result of the present invention, a single bar code symbol reading system can be used to read bar code symbols that are printed on the arbitrary surfaces of cans and bottles.
