    摘要: The invention teaches apparatus suited for holding highly corrosive solvents heated under sealed conditions to temperatures up to 500.degree. C., for even extended durations. The apparatus is in the form of an open top vessel having a removable cover therefor, a seal cooperating between the vessel and cover, and clamping structures isolated radially beyond the seal from the vessel contents to hold the cover and vessel sealed together. The vessel and cover can be made structurally of chemically resistent material, such as a nickel alloy; or can be made as a separate chemically resistent liner, cover and seal structure contained within an outer pressure shell and cover, and clamping structures. The liner, cover, and seal would be formed of chemically resistent tantalum (Ta), platinum (Pt) or polytetrafluoroethylene. Gem-quality diamonds can be refined by using different related vessels exclusively to hold respective caustic, acid and rinse solvents, and moving the diamonds from vessel to vessel sequentially.

    摘要: The invention teaches the improvement of certain super alloys by exposing the alloy to an atmosphere of elemental nitrogen at elevated temperatures in excess of 750.degree. C. but less than 1150.degree. C. for an extended duration, viz., by nitriding the surface of the alloy, to establish barrier nitrides of the order of 25-100 micrometers thickness. These barrier nitrides appear to shield the available oxidizing metallic species of the alloy for up to a sixfold improved resistance against oxidation and also appear to impede egress of surface dislocations for increased fatigue and creep strengths.

    摘要: A method of decontaminating a radioactively contaminated oxide on a surface. The radioactively contaminated oxide is contacted with a diphosphonic acid solution for a time sufficient to dissolve the oxide and subsequently produce a precipitate containing most of the radioactive values. Thereafter, the diphosphonic solution is separated from the precipitate. HEDPA is the preferred diphosphonic acid and oxidizing and reducing agents are used to initiate precipitation. SFS is the preferred reducing agent.

    摘要: The disclosed trellis apparatus is assemblied from a number of separate substantially identical rigid L-shaped pieces, each having short and long generally straight portions meeting across a generally right angle bend, and a loop formed adjacent the free end of each portion. The loop on the short portion is open and presents a gap wider than the cross-section of the long portion and further lies in a plane generally perpendicular to the straight portion. The free end of each long portion may be inserted direct)y into the plant dirt, at different circumferential locations radially adjacent the plant, to a depth that provides stable support thereof and that orients the short portion substantially horizontal and laterally adjacent the plant foliage. The open loop on each short portion can be interlocked with the long portion of the adjacent piece at or near its bend, to laterally secure the pieces together, thereby forming a closed containment ring surrounding the plant at a desired height above the dirt for containing the plant foliage. The loop on the long portion holds the piece firmly within the dirt and blunts the otherwise pointed end for saftey.

    摘要: The invention teaches a deep boiling process for refining diamonds, be they raw or cut and polished. The process provides for initially precleaning the diamonds with solvents including alcohol, acetone, sulfuric acid, hydrogen peroxide, and/or water, to remove surface oils, hydrocarbons and other common surface impurities therefrom. The process then provides the use of separate sealed vessels wherein the diamonds are respectively submerged in strong caustic and acid solvents, and heated to between 220.degree. and 500.degree. C. with associated high vaporous pressures, for durations of possibly more than a day. The caustic solvent comprises potassium hydroxide and/or sodium hydroxide and possibly also potassium nitrate, and breaks down and removes the "glassy" structures and other complex oxides in the diamonds; while the acid solvent comprises Aqua Regia [hydrocholoric acid and nitric acid] and possibly also sulfuric acid, and removes metallic traces in the diamonds by forming water soluble chlorides and nitrates. The diamonds are rinses, between exposures to the caustic and acid solvents and after the last exposure to either, with solvents including water, acetone and/or alcohol.Vessels suited to preform this process are also disclosed.
