The invention provides a method for dewatering coal tailing aqueous slurries in a twin belt press process. The method including the step of adding to the slurry a coagulant composition including a vinylamine copolymer including from about 1 to about 99 mole percent vinylamine and from about 1 to about 99 mole percent of at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of vinylformamide, vinyl alcohol, vinyl acetate, vinyl pyrrolidinone and the esters, amides and salts of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid.

The invention relates to the clarification of deinking process waters which result from the recycling of paper. More specifically, the present invention relates to the use of containing vinylamine as water clarifying agents in said processes.

A method of stabilizing polymeric lattices comprising the addition of an organophilic clay which, when properly activated and dispersed, sets up a network that will suspend the polymer particles and retard the settling process is disclosed. The network is easily destroyed by the application of shear, but then reforms when shear is removed.

The invention provides a method for manufacturing tissue paper. According to the method, a yankee dryer adhesive composition is applied to a metal surface of a drying drum. The yankee dryer adhesive composition preferably includes from about 1 to about 100 mole percent vinylamine and from about 1 to about 99 of at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of vinylformamide, vinyl acetate and vinyl alcohol. The yankee dryer adhesive composition is contacted with a continuous paper web. The continuous paper web is then dried. The dry continuous paper web is creped with a metal blade to form tissue paper.

A method for clarifying food processing waste water containing suspended solids comprising (iii) adding to the waste water with an effective amount of at least one vinylamine polymer having a molecular weight of at least 10,000, wherein the polymer is prepared by first polymerizing N-vinylformamide and, optionally, vinyl acetate to form a vinylformamide polymer or a vinylformamide/vinylacetate copolymer and then subjecting the vinyl formamide polymer or vinylformamide/vinylacetate copolymer to acid or base hydrolysis to form a vinylamine/vinylformaide copolymer, a vinylamine homopolymer or a up vinylamine/vinylalcohol copolymer; (ii) coagulating and flocculating the suspended solids; and (iii) separating the coagulated and flocculated suspended solids from the wastewater.

Processes for recovering hydrocarbons from subterranean formations are disclosed. The hydrocarbon can be contacted with water or steam and one or more additives, and subsequently recovered. The hydrocarbon can be selected from the group consisting of heavy or light crude oil, bitumen, an oil sand ore, a tar sand ore and combinations thereof. The additive can be, for example, a fluorinated hydrocarbon, one or more alcohols, combinations of alcohols, and combinations of one or more alcohols and one or more fluorinated hydrocarbons. Compositions or mixtures including hydrocarbons, water or steam, and additives are also disclosed.

A method of enhancing flux of tailings settling pond water from an oil sands process through a membrane separation system and purifying the water comprising is disclosed. The process comprises the following steps: (a) treating the water with an effective amount of one or more water-soluble cationic polymers, amphoteric polymers, zwitterionic polymers, or a combination thereof; (b) passing the treated water through a membrane separation system; and (c) optionally, passing the permeate from step (b) through an additional membrane separation system.

A method for the reduction of the emission of mercury into the environment from the burning of fossil fuels with the use of polydithiocarbamic compounds. The polydithiocarbamic compounds are used for the capture of mercury from the resulting flue gases using a flue gas desulfrization systems or scrubbers. The method uses polydithiocarbamic compounds in conjunction with a scrubber to capture mercury and reduce its emission and/or re-emission with stack gases. The method is a unique process of reducing the toxic levels of mercury, which allows for the use of coal as a clean and environmentally friendlier fuel source.
