The present invention provides improved methods for purifying and/or removing oily particles, and/or contaminants suspended or dissolved in water. In particular the process relates to an additive composition that has the appropriate surfactant characteristics for effectively removing an oil phase from an oil/aqueous mixed phase via foam fractionation. According to the invention, a hydrophobically modified polymer that acts as an associative thickener is combined with surfactant in appropriate ratios to facilitate oil removal for water purification in any of a number of commercial, environmental and industrial applications.

In some embodiments, the composition comprises: a cationic polyacrylamide-type polymer having a charge density of about 10% to about 40% and a molecular weight of about 600×104 g/gmol to about 900×104 g/gmol; and a cationic surfactant, the surfactant comprising an alkyl quaternary ammonium salt. Also provided are related methods and kits for treating wastewater with dispersed and dissolved organic matters and oils. Embodiments of the compositions, methods, and kits can be used to treat oil-in-water emulsions, produced water, and process water containing dispersed and/or dissolved organic matter such as hydrocarbons from various process industries including Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) oil operations.

The method may include subsea dredging or sediment collection in the vicinity of the mineral fines injection. This approach may be utilized to provide a continuous supply of material without interruption to injection operations.

A method for retracting oil on a water surface, and a method for reducing the quantity of oil on an oil control boom are described. Spreading of oil can be reversed by reducing the surface tension of the seawater, for example by using a low concentration of a water-soluble surfactant, such as a non-ionic surfactant. A controlled amount of the surfactant may be continuously discharged at the inner-wall of a spill control boom surrounding the oil spill. The spilled oil is caused to retract away from the boom toward the center of the area encircled thereby, such that the oil layer becomes sufficiently thick to be more effectively removed mechanically. The surfactant also reduces the amount of oil on the spill control boom, whereby the boom can easily be removed from a remediated oil spill and reused at a later date without further cleaning.

A system and method treat oilfield produced water by two-stages of hazardous sulfide treatments. In an embodiment, a two-stage oil and gas field produced water treatment system includes an oil removal vessel. The oilfield produced water is introduced to the oil removal vessel. The oil removal vessel removes a portion of the hydrocarbons from the oilfield produced water to provide a reduced oil produced water. In addition, the system includes an iron sponge. The reduced oil produced water is introduced to the iron sponge, and the iron sponge removes a portion of the hazardous sulfides from the reduced oil produced water to provide a reduced sulfide produced water. The system also includes a stabilized sodium percarbonate solution. The stabilized sodium percarbonate solution is mixed with the reduced sulfide produced water to remove a portion of the hazardous sulfides from the reduced sulfide produced water to provide a treated produced water.

Compositions and methods are described to accomplish the in-situ remediation of contaminated groundwater and soil. Such compositions may comprise oil droplets, a water-miscible non-aqueous liquid phase, and one or more solid particulates. The oil droplets and the solid particulates are contained within the water-miscible non-aqueous liquid phase. The solid particulates may comprise one or more of zero valent iron, iron silicide, ferrosilicon, magnetite, particulate carbon, iron/carbon composites, calcium carbonate, and palladium. The solid particulates may comprise zero valent iron particles. The water-miscible non-aqueous liquid phase may be glycerol and the composition may be an oil-in-glycerol emulsion. Exemplary methods of preparing a groundwater remediation product comprise mixing oil droplets, a water-miscible non-aqueous liquid phase, and solid particulates contained in the water-miscible non-aqueous liquid phase to form a composition. The composition may be diluted with water in a mass ratio of 0 to 99% water such that the composition becomes an aqueous product suitable for applying to groundwater and soil.
