Abstract:
The present invention provides compositions and methods for modulating flowering time in plants. Maize RAP2.7 nucleotide sequences are disclosed which upon overexpression cause later flowering and when inhibited cause earlier flowering. Also disclosed is a DNA sequence which acts as a regulator/enhancer of RAP2.7, termed VGT1. This sequence does not code for any known protein, but acts as either a RNAi element or a regulatory DNA or RNA element that either directly regulates expression of flowering genes such as Rap2.7 or specifically targets expression of other genes which control flowering genes such as Rap2.7. This element this can be used as a sequence-based marker to identify inbred and hybrids which have altered maturity. Methods for expressing these nucleotide sequences in a plant for modifying maturity and flowering in plants are provided as well as expression constructs, vectors, transformed cells and plants.
Abstract:
This invention relates to polynucleotide sequences encoding a gene that can confer resistance to at least one herbicide. It further relates to plants and seeds of plants carrying chimeric genes comprising said polynucleotide sequences, which enhance or confer resistance to at least one herbicide, and methods of making said plants and seeds. The invention further presents sequences that can be used as molecular markers that in turn can be used to identify the region of interest in corn lines resulting from new crosses and to quickly and efficiently select the best lines for breeding strategies by avoiding sensitive lines. Methods of identifying a plant with an Nsf1 locus using molecular markers are described.
Abstract:
An isolated polynucleotide encoding a delayed flowering gene (DLF1) is provided, as is the isolated DLF1 protein, peptide portions thereof, and functional fragments of the DLF1. Also provided is a transgenic plant, which contains in its genome a transgene containing the polynucleotide encoding the DLF1 protein, or a nucleotide sequence complementary to the encoding polynucleotide. In addition, methods of identifying a nucleotide sequence and/or a heterologous protein that is specifically bound by the DLF1 protein, methods of using the isolated polynucleotide (or encoded polypeptide), for example, to modulate plant cell growth and/or development, are provided.

Abstract:
Compositions and methods are provided for modulating the level of phytate in plants. More specifically, the invention relates to methods of modulating the level of phytate utilizing nucleic acids comprising multidrug resistance-associated protein (MRP) nucleotide sequences to modulate the expression of MRP(s) in a plant of interest. The compositions and methods of the invention find use in agriculture for improving the nutritional quality of food and feed by reducing the levels of phytate and/or increasing the levels of non-phytate phosphorus in food and feed. The invention also finds use in reducing the environmental impact of animal waste.
Abstract:
The invention relates to methods and compositions for identifying and selecting maize plants with enhanced resistance to northern leaf blight. Maize plants generated by the methods of the invention are also a feature of the invention.
