The deflection section has a rear face. The front face has first and second side edges and a width defined between the first and second side edges. A depth of the deflection section is defined as a distance between the rear face and the front face. At at least one point along the length of the deflection surface, the depth of the deflection section at a distance from the first side edge is greater than the depth of the deflection section at the same distance from the second side edge.

Lower end (70) of key is abutting against ridge (67) formed on inner surface of sleeve (2). when key (27) is engaged to teeth (32), teeth (31, 29) on elements (4, 6) are misaligned. Pressure increase results in piston (3) and drive element (4) moving downward freeing key (27) from engagement with teeth (32). Teeth (31, 29) are forced into alignment with subsequent rotation of timing element (6). In this position, ports on piston and sleeve are partially aligned. Pressure decrease results in element (6) moving up key (27) moving to next notch of teeth (32). When key (29) coincides with slot (50), piston (3) moves further down, partially occluding piston ports. When key (27) coincides with slot (52) piston (3) moves even further down totally occluding piston ports.

    摘要: A downhole swivel joint assembly comprising an upper component and a lower component. The components may assume either of two stable positions relative to each other, namely an unactivated configuration in which the components are rotationally fast with each other by virtue of the inter-engagement of splines of the lower component with splines of the upper component and an activated configuration in which the respective splines are disengaged so that the upper and lower components can rotate relative to each other. In the activated configuration the upper component is supported relative to the lower component on a ball bearing pack. Movement of the components between the activated and unactivated configurations is controlled by a resiliently deformable latch member which is C-shaped in transverse cross-section. The latch member has an internal profile which co-operates with an external profile provided on the upper component mandrel to allow the upper and lower components to snap between the activated and unactivated configurations.

A resilently deformable retaining device maintains the components in the illustrated first relative axial position until downward movement of the housing is stopped and a sufficient load is applied to the mandrel to overcome the retaining force of the retaining device whereupon the mandrel is able to move downwardly relative to the housing to adopt a second relative axial position. Apertures are provided in the wall of the mandrel and apertures are provided in the wall of the housing. When the mandrel is in the illustrated first relative axial position the apertures and are isolated from each other by a seal. When the mandrel is in the second relative axial position the apertures communicate with each other to permit flow from the interior of the mandrel to the exterior of the housing.

Movement of the piston (42) is controlled by a pin (86) secured to one of the body and a control member, and a control groove (52) in which a portion of the pin is received formed in the other of the body and control member. An arrangement of elements (32,76) respectively connected to the control member and body is such that, as the control member moves axially, increasing lengths of the elements locate adjacent one another so as to provide resistance to relative rotation in at least one direction of the control member and body. The relative rotation is rotation which presses the control member against the control groove. The risk of damage to the control pin is thereby reduced.
