The mounting frame may be aligned with and rotatably attached to the target sprocket to allow for aligned rotation of the target sprocket about the wheel axle. The mounting frame may be attached to the unitary member by a bearing or the like and has an opening to receive an electric motor having a pinion sprocket to enable the pinion sprocket to engage the target sprocket to rotate the rear wheel upon application by the rider of propulsion controls. A free wheel clutch may be provided on the unitary power module or target sprocket to allow the wheel to rotate faster than the motor without motor drag.

A cooperative differential drive system (20) for use in material handling and flight control and guidance systems, and the like. The drive system (20) may be employed in application that require high resolution task repeatability capabilities and the execution of precise position and force trajectory path following routines. A differential gear system (24) is driven by two servo-controlled actuators (22, 23) under control of a controller (21). The first actuator (22) is regulated at constant speed while the second actuator (23) is modulated at an appropriately varying speed to achieve a desired drive speed of a load. The second actuator (23) is controlled such that it dos not change rotational direction. Ultimate control of the load is achieved by way of the differential gear system (24) that combines the two actuator speeds to achieve the desired load speed. The differential gear system (24) is optionally coupled by way of a clutch system (25) to the load. The clutch system (25) is engaged after both actuators (22, 23) have reached their nominal operating speeds, thus eliminating actuator start-up problems. Both actuators (22, 23) are kept in constant motion so that they do not operate near their dead-zone region, thus eliminating nonlinearity problems.

A unitary power module, which may be a "kit" for use with a standard bicycle, is used as a propulsion system which includes a battery affixed to said bicycle, and an electric motor having a pinion sprocket affixed thereon. The electric motor is suitable to be connected to the battery by a battery cable. A power assist apparatus, which includes a battery powered motor mounted on a manually operated vehicle, such as a bicycle, and is to be selectively usable by the rider of the bicycle to not only assist in the manual operation of the bicycle, but also conceivably as a sole source of operation of the bicycle. The power assist apparatus is fixedly mounted on the bicycle and is carried with the bicycle at all times. The power assist apparatus includes a motor assembly which is operated through a gear connection to drive a driven gear mounted in conjunction with a wheel of the bicycle. The rotational axis of the shaft of the motor is parallel to the rotational axis of the wheel.
