A printhead for an inkjet print cartridge capable of generating low drop weight ink drops is produced by reducing the dimensions of the firing chamber. A thinner orifice plate is needed to reliably achieve the lower drop weight ink drops. To overcome the material strength limitations of such a thinner orifice plate, an annealing step in the manufacture of the printhead is employed to modify the material properties of the orifice plate. This improved process improves the print quality of printers and aids in the production handling properties of the orifice plate. Orifice plates having a thickness in the range of 25 .mu.m to 40 .mu.m are being produced.

Islands of barrier layer material of an inkjet printhead are disposed between an ink source and the ink feed channels leading to the ink firing chambers to filter particles in the ink. Dimensions of the ink feed channels and ink ejecting orifices have been reduced in size and the thickness of the barrier layer has been made thinner. The nominal size of the filter pores is less than the barrier layer thickness while the width of the ink feed channels and the bore diameter of the orifices is larger than the barrier layer thickness.

A method for increasing the cloud point and stability of an ink. An ink is provided which includes a solvent, a coloring agent, and an ethoxylated non-ionic surfactant to increase print quality. To increase the cloud point of the ink (which is affected by the surfactant), the ink is placed in contact with a polymeric foam (e.g. polyurethane foam) which reacts with the surfactant to produce an ink product having a higher cloud point. The treated ink product is then removed from the foam. Treatment may be accomplished by passing the ink through the foam before placing the ink in an ink cartridge. Removal of the treated ink product from the foam may be achieved by compressing the foam. Alternatively, the ink may be placed within an ink cartridge containing the polymeric foam in which the ink will be treated in situ inside the cartridge.

Aqueous inks are provided for use in vehicles employing from about 10 to about 40 wt % of one or more organic solvents; and optionally up to about 5 wt % of an additive independently selected from the group consisting of surfactant, buffer, biocide, and mixtures thereof. The inks comprise, by weight, from about 1 to about 10 wt % Reactive Black 31 dye in either or both of its hydrolyzed forms, namely vinyl sulfone form and ethyl hydroxy form. Ink-jet inks made using the Pacified Reactive Black 31 provide improved lightfastness across a range of printing media while providing reliable ink-jet pen performance.
