Abstract:

Abstract:
The invention relates to a method of producing discrete patterns of an adhesive coating on a substrate, comprising the following steps: (a) the substrate is moved continuously or discontinuously in a conveying direction, (b) in an application zone a low-viscosity polymerizable and/or crosslinkable precursor material of an adhesive material is applied two-dimensionally to the substrate through at least one opening of substantially slotlike configuration of at least one movable applicator, a pattern being produced by movement of the applicator relative to the substrate, (c) downstream of the application zone the applied precursor material is polymerized and/or crosslinked.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to polymerized hydrogels and processes to make such hydrogels, in particular hydrogel adhesives which are capable of attaching to mammalian skin and can be used in various personal care products, such as waste-management articles, and a variety of functional articles to be worn by a human. The hydrogels described herein are characterized by very low amount of residual starting monomers, impurities, and/or by-products that could be formed during polymerization. Specifically, the hydrogels are made by adding scavengers and/or chain transfer agent prior to polymerization. It has been found, that upon addition of same scavengers the material properties of the polymerized hydrogel differ from the properties of gels polymerized without the scavenger. This is due to the fact, that these specific scavengers act also as chain transfer agents in the radical polymerization. Further studies showed that also chain transfer agents, that are no scanvengers for residual monomer(s), impurities or byproducts influence the material properties of the polymerized hydrogel adhesive.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to hydrogel adhesives which are capable of attaching to mammalian skin, exhibit excellent attachment and painless removal properties, and which show excellent stability upon storage at room temperature or even at elevated temperatures and for longer periods of time. The adhesive hydrogel described in the present invention can be used as body adhesive in products for e.g. personal care, medical devices, beauty care and a variety of functional articles to be worn by a human. The hydrogel adhesive of the invention comprises 10-60 wt. % of a cross-linked hydrophilic polymer, 5-80 wt. % of a water-soluble non-ionic humectant, and from about 10-85 wt. % water, wherein the hydrophilic polymer comprises at least 80 mole % of one or more weak-acid monomer units having a pKa above 3, the weak-acid monomer being more than 60 mole % in its salt form, the level of monomer in acid form in said hydrophilic polymer not exceeding 50 mole % of all monomer units and the hydrogel adhesive having a peel strength on PET of 0.3 to 5.0 N/cm and a stability index measured after 14 days SIx 14 below 0.50, preferably below 0.20, most preferably below 0.10.
Abstract:
Aqueous dispersions of water-soluble and/or water-swellable anionic polymers which are obtainable by free radical polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated, anionic monomers in an aqueous medium in the presence of at leas one stabilizer, the polymerization being carried out in the presence of at least one water-soluble polymer of the groups consisting of (a) graft polymers of vinyl acetate and/or vinyl propionate on (i) polyethylene glycols or (ii) polyethylene glycols or polypropylene glycols blocked at one or both terminal groups with alkyd carboxyl or amino groups, polyalkylene glycols, polyalkylene glycols blocked at one or both terminal groups with alkyl carboxy or amino groups and (b) water-soluble copolymers of (b1) nonionic monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, (b2) cationic monoethylenically unsaturated monomers and if appropriate (b3) anionic monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, the fraction of the interpolymerized cationic monomers being greater than that of the anionic monomers, as a stabilizer, said aqueous dispersions are prepared by free radical polymerization of the anionic monomers in an aqueous medium in the presence of the abovementioned water-soluble polymers (a) and (b) and said aqueous dispersions are used as thickeners for aqueous systems.
