摘要: A rotatable charging apparatus includes a length extending between a first end and a second end, with the rotatable charging apparatus centered about an axis parallel to the length. The rotatable charging apparatus outer periphery forms N apparatus positions. One charging device is fixed to each of N−1 apparatus positions. The remaining (Nth) apparatus position is devoid of a charging device, thus forming an “empty” charging device position. A host printing machine selectively causes the rotatable charging apparatus to rotate about its axis thereby selectively position any of its N−1 charging devices to face a proximately-located photosensitive element. When a problem exists with the current charging device, or when the total number of operating hours of the current charging device exceeds a fixed threshold, the printing machine causes the rotatable charging apparatus to rotate from its current charging device to position a new charging device facing the photosensitive element. Also, the printing machine causes the rotatable charging apparatus to rotate from its current charging device to the empty charging device position facing the photosensitive element when a power-down or hard-stop condition exists in the printing machine.

摘要: A development system including a developer transport adapted for depositing developer material on an imaging surface having an electrostatic latent image thereon, including a housing defining a chamber storing a supply of developer material including toner. A donor member is mounted partially in said chamber and spaced from the imaging surface, for transporting developer on an outer surface thereof to a region opposed from the imaging surface. The donor member has a magnetic assembly, which includes a plurality of poles, and a sleeve, enclosing said magnetic assembly and rotating about said magnetic assembly. A sensor measures a magnetic field of said donor roll at a predefined position on said donor roll. A magnetic system generates a magnetic field to reduce developer bed height of said developer material on said donor member in a development zone.

摘要: Piezoelectric properties of materials, such as, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) are used to generate surface potentials that are adequate for the xerographic transfer function. A web of PVDF is used to form a transfer intermediate belt. The magnitude and direction of fields generated around the belt can be controlled by judicious location of field neutralizing devices and the direction, location and magnitude of the belt strain. Toner images are first transferred onto the belt and then transferred from the belt onto copy sheets without the need for high voltage power supplies.

摘要: A piezo-active charge retentive member, such as a photoreceptor, has a grounded electrode layer separating a photoreceptive layer and a piezo-active layer. External vibration sources become unnecessary since supplying an A.C. voltage across the piezo-active layer to the grounded electrode layer causes the piezo-active layer, and thus the entire photoreceptor, to vibrate. Vibration of the photoreceptor causes a carrier bead bouncing effect where carrier beads from the developer collide with the photoreceptor in the development area. The carrier bear bouncing effect increases the number of carrier bead-toner-photoreceptor contact events during development of the photoreceptor's latent image.

External vibration sources become unnecessary since supplying an A.C. voltage across the piezo-active layer to the grounded electrode layer causes the piezo-active layer, and thus the entire photoreceptor, to vibrate. Vibration of the photoreceptor enhances the transfer of development powder from the photoreceptor to the transfer material, such as a sheet of paper. Vibration of the photoreceptor also improves the development of images and assists the cleaning of residual development powder from the photoreceptor surface.

摘要: A method and apparatus for printing including the use of a pyroelectric imaging member in a novel fashion to produce prints having improved resolution. The prints are produced by thermally exposing the pyroelectric imaging member in a localized fashion while neutralizing the surface charge and subsequently cooling the exposed surface of the imaging member to generate a latent electrostatic image thereon. Subsequently, the latent image is developed with charged toner particles, and transferred from the pyroelectric member to a substrate through the use of a second thermal treatment which serves to reverse the polarity of the imaging member and thereby eliminate the electrostatic forces attracting the toner particles to the imaging member. The transferred toner image may be simultaneously or subsequently fixed to the substrate by a thermal or other well known fusing treatment.

摘要: An electrophotographic device includes a flexible belt-type sheet of paper or other transfer member into intimate contact with the charge retentive member, bearing a developed latent image and brings a charge retentive surface at a transfer station for electrostatic transfer of toner from the charge retentive surface to the sheet. At the transfer station, a resonator suitable for generating vibratory energy is arranged in line contact with the back side of the charge retentive surface, to uniformly apply vibratory energy to the charge retentive member. Toner is released from the electrostatic and mechanical forces adhering it to the charge retentive surface at the line contact position. In those areas of the latent image characterized by non-initimate contact of the sheet with the charge retentive surface, toner is transferred across the gap by the electrostatic transfer process, despite the fact that the charge on the paper would not normally be sufficient to attract toner to the sheet from the charge retentive surface.

摘要: An electrostatic voltmeter with probe for measuring the charge on a surface, the probe comprising a microdeflector unit having a base; a flexible finger supported on the base in cantilever fashion, the finger deflecting in response to a potential difference thereacross; means to bias the base to a predetermined potential; a sensing electrode on the finger having a side positionable in spaced relation to the surface, the capacitive relation established creating a charge representative of the charge on the surface on the sensing electrode causing deflection of the finger; means to impinge a beam of light on the finger; and a detector disposed to detect reflection of the beam by the finger on predetermined deflection of the finger corresponding to a preset charge measured on the surface. In a second embodiment, a feed-back loop is provided; in a third embodiment, the finger is vibrated to render the probe spacing insensitive; and in a forth embodiment the microdeflector unit is modified to function as the image reading device in a multi-code copier/printer application.
