An optical cross-connect switch is disclosed for switching optical communication signals between any of a plurality of input optical channels and any of a plurality of output optical channels. The switch comprises a first pattern projector configured to project one or more first control signal radiation patterns and a plurality of output encoders. Each output encoder is associated with one of the plurality of output optical channels. Each output encoder is positioned, relative to its associated output optical channel and the first pattern projector, to receive the first control signal radiation patterns and to detect at least a portion of one or more corresponding output Moirnull interference patterns produced by the control signal radiation patterns. Each output encoder is configured to generate a corresponding output control signal indicative of an intensity of detected output Moirnull interference patterns.

A thermal inorganic resist for lithographic processes and image creation is disclosed. In one embodiment an In layer of 15 nm is deposited, followed by a Bi layer of 15 nm. Upon exposure to a optical light pulse of sufficient intensity the optical absorption heats the film above the eutectic melting point (110null C. for BiIn) and the resist forms an alloy in the exposed area, replicating patterns projected on its surface. Optical characteristics of the alloyed layers are in these resists typically different from the unexposed layers creating a visual image of the exposure pattern before the development etch aiding in exposure control. The resist layer is then stripped, leaving the pattern layer on the substrate. In resists showing significant optical differences (such as BiIn) after exposure this same material can be used to create images for data storage, and, when transparent, photomasks for optical lithography.

Polymer materials are described that undergo a 2-level 3 dimensional crosslinking process. During this process, hydrophilic polymers are crosslinked at two levels, the first results in a low level of crosslinking which leads to a toughening of the layer preventing dissolution by the fountain solution but with the layer remaining hydrophilic. The second level of crosslinking is higher and is the result of exposure to a laser diode thermal imaging device. The crosslinking at this second level results in a loss of hydrophilicity and provides instead an oleophilic image capable of accepting and transferring oil based ink. The polymer materials are particularly useful in lithographic printing systems where they may used in articles such as a printing plate comprising a substrate having coated thereon a layer that becomes that becomes less hydrophilic upon exposure to thermal energy (e.g., heat, particularly heat applied by a laser, other columnated light, or thermal printhead) that effects crosslinking (initial crosslinking or increased crosslinking) in the layer, the layer comprising a mixture of a crosslinked polymer and a thermally active crosslinking metal compound (e.g., a metal salt, metal ester or metal oxide).

An optical cross connect switch includes a number of monitor channels. The monitor channels can be used to calibrate the switch while it is in operation. The coordinates associated with individual channels of the switching unit may be represented in a common coordinate system. Transformations between the common coordinate system and coordinate systems of individual channels may be adjusted to compensate for drift.

In an inkjet printer there is a trade off between speed and quality. Higher speed can be achieved at the expense of quality as inkjet droplets deposited are distorted in shape and or placement position if the relative velocity between the inkjet nozzles and the printing medium is simply increased. The velocity above which distortion occurs is termed threshold velocity. A feed mechanism that varies the printing medium advance rate to allow printing at below threshold velocity while maintaining a high average feed rate is described. By advancing the printing medium at a periodically varying velocity, with the printing medium velocity lower than the threshold velocity, the problem is avoided.
