    摘要: A method and apparatus for multiplexing and demultiplexing optical signals. The apparatus includes first and second optical waveguides coupled via an optical coupler. The optical coupler has a coupling waveguide and an optical switching wedge attached to a piezoelectric actuator. In operation, first and second optical signals are received by the first and second optical waveguides, respectively. If the signals are to be combined, the optical switching wedge is moved to a first position where it is optically coupled to the first optical waveguide. The first optical signal is then transmitted, via the coupling waveguide, to the second optical waveguide, where it is combined with the second optical signal. If the signals are not to be combined, the optical switching wedge is moved to a second position where it is optically uncoupled from the first optical waveguide.

    摘要: A free space optical switch that uses both an open loop control mode and a closed loop control mode. The open loop control mode is used to transition to a state where at least some light is sensed at a destination port. A closed loop control mode is then used, whereby a series of controlled dither signals are adjusted for system dynamics. Modifying the dither signals in this matter allows moving actuators at a rate that is much closer to the natural frequency of the underlying system, and hence speeds up the system convergence process. Variable modulation amplitudes may be employed on the dither signals to maximize convergence speed. In particular, changes in the dither signal can be made in accordance with the change in amplitude as a function of a gradient along a parabola that models the optical system response. According to still further aspects, the dither signals may be compensated for a desired and selectable attenuation level of output optical power.

An input optical signal processing section converts wavelengths contained in each input WDM signal into wavelengths the number of which is equal to the number of WDM signals, compresses the pulse widths of the WDM signals by dividing the pulse widths by the number of the wavelengths contained in each input WDM signal, and performs a phase shift so that the phases of a plurality of compressed signal will not be the same. A wavelength switching section includes passive optical devices and distributes the optical signals processed by the input optical signal processing section according to wavelengths. An output optical signal processing section converts wavelengths contained in the optical signals distributed by the wavelength switching section into wavelengths recognized from the phases of the optical signals, expands the pulse widths of the optical signals, and outputs WDM signals.

    摘要: An optical switch having liquid or bubbles in switching sites operates with a fluid pressure less than the vapor pressure of the liquid. This pressure differential is equal to the surface tension induced pressure drop across a bubble having a critical size selected according to switching site geometry. Each switching site has a stable state including a bubble larger than the critical size and another stable state with no bubble. Local heating provides nucleation energy to create a bubble but is not required to maintain the bubble. Globally or locally increasing the fluid pressure collapses bubbles in switching sites to reset all or selected switching sites. One switching site creates rapidly expanding bubbles near but outside the optical cavity of the switching site. The bubble's expansion causes liquid flow that locally increases pressure and collapses a bubble in the optical cavity or pushes the bubble from the optical cavity into an absorber cavity.

    摘要: Disclosed are devices and methods for switching transmission of light from one optical fiber to another. A steerable fiber has an end in a capsule, as do one or more cooperating fibers. Initially the steerable fiber is at a rest position, from where it couples light into one of the cooperating fibers. The end of the steerable fiber includes an armature that moves in response to applied magnetic fields. Then a magnetic field is generated selectively, and a pair of pole pieces transfers it to a location inside the capsule, which is close to the armature. Thus the end of the steerable fiber is moved to another position, from where it couples light into the other cooperating fiber.
