    摘要: Increased efficiency within a system comprised of a plurality of storage devices (121 and 122) is achieved by evaluating each request to determine: (i) current storage status of the storage devices; (ii) storage capability of the storage devices; and (iii) at least one characteristic of the media block undergoing storage. Selection of one of the plurality of storage devices occurs in accordance with evaluating the write request. Thereafter the media block gets written to the selected storage device.

    摘要: A media area network includes a storage system having at least one storage device for storing digitized information. A host bus adapter provides a link between the storage system and a host system that provides overall control of the media area network. Within the host bus adapter, a lower-level port driver monitors communications between the storage system and the host bus adapter. In the event of a communications failure, the lower-level port driver initiates switching from a failed port to an alternative port, thereby achieving fail-over recovery. Allocating the responsibility for fail-over recovery to the lower-level port driver assures timely handling of port failures, thereby reducing potential latency delays.

    摘要: Management of one or more storage devices is achieved by first identifying each device by its make and model, and then establishing a database containing information about that device, such as (a) operational rules, (b) commands and (c) processing routines. From the information obtained from the database, a Graphical User Interface is created for display to afford a user at least one menu option for selection. Upon selecting the one menu option, the user obtains at least one of (a) a display of information associated with the identified storage device, and (b) execution of at least one process to control, at least in part, the operation of the identified storage device. The user's selection is processed and the Graphical User Interface is automatically updated in response to the processing of the user's selected menu option.
