Abstract:
An apparatus for diverting incoming printed products is provided. The apparatus includes a roll, a first motor coupled to the roll and a controller coupled to the first motor for controlling the rotation of the roller for diverting printed products along one of two different paths, each path associated with a direction of rotation of the roll. This apparatus may also include a shaft with at least one flipper mounted thereon and a second motor coupled to the shaft.
Abstract:
A printing press is provided that includes at least one variable cutoff printing unit printing images of at least one cutoff length on a web, at least one cutting cylinder downstream of the at least one variable cutoff printing unit cutting the web into signatures. The printing press also includes a pair of first accelerator nip rolls receiving the web as the web is cut into the signatures and accelerating each of the signatures and at least one motor accelerating the pair of first accelerator nip rolls such that the first accelerator nip rolls have a first surface velocity equal to a velocity of the web as the web is received by the first accelerator nip rolls and the first accelerator nip rolls have a second surface velocity greater than the first surface velocity as the first accelerator nip rolls release each of the signatures. A folder and a method of operating a folder are also provided.

Abstract:
A folder includes a first signature conveyor conveying first signatures along a first signature path; a second signature conveyor conveying second signatures along a second signature path; and a chopper located between the first and second signature paths imparting a fold on both the first and second signatures. A chopper and method are also provided.
Abstract:
An apparatus for transporting folded signatures is provided which includes a first roller and a second roller forming a first nip with the first roller. The first and second rollers each have a compressible outer layer, and are rotatable about respective axes. Preferably, the compressible outer later comprises a microcellular foam. The apparatus also includes a plurality of first transport tapes passing through the first nip and a plurality of second transport tapes passing through the first nip. The plurality of second transport tapes are wrapped at least partially around the second roller so that a signature transported between the first and second transport tapes between the first nip undergoes a change in transport direction as it is transported at least partially around the second roller. Preferably, the signatures enter the first nip perpendicular to a plane passing through the axes of the first and second rollers.

Abstract:
The present invention is related to a device for seizing a flat material (25) such as a web of material (1) on a transporting surface (15). A first cylinder (7) has at least one knife assembly (12) assigned to its respective surface (9). A paper conducting cylinder (14) such as a transfer cylinder or a folding cylinder supports a flat material (25) on its respective outer circumference (15). Biased product seizing element (27) assigned to said circumference (9) of said first cylinder (7) are provided, adopting on cooperation with said leading edge (25) supported on said outer surface (15) of the paper conducting cylinder (14) an engaging position (32).
Abstract:
An apparatus for transporting signatures is provided which includes a moving transport surface for transporting signatures; a pair of eccentric guide rollers, rotatable about respective axes, the pair of guide rollers positioned opposite one another to receive signatures therebetween from the moving transport surface; and a diverter positioned downstream of the guide rollers. The diverter is movable between a first position to divert signatures received from the guide rollers to a first downstream moving transport surface and a second position to divert signatures received from the guide rollers to a second downstream moving transport surface.
Abstract:
An apparatus for diverting incoming printed products which includes a shaft, at least one first flipper mounted in a first fixed direction on the shaft, a motor coupled to the shaft; and a controller coupled to the motor for controlling positioning of the shaft to allowing printed products to be diverted along different paths associated with a particular shaft position. The apparatus further includes a low inertia coupler interconnected between the motor and the shaft. Alternatively, the apparatus includes a roll, a first motor coupled to the roll and a controller coupled to the first motor for controlling the rotation of the roller for diverting printed products along one of two different paths, each path associated with a direction of rotation of the roll. This alternative apparatus may also include a shaft with at least one flipper mounted thereon and a second motor coupled to the shaft.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to providing a product delivery apparatus which includes a fan wheel or the like having a modified arrangement for interacting with a product feed device, to enhance the control with which products are delivered into the pockets of the fan wheel. In accordance with exemplary embodiments, characteristics of the fan wheel are adjusted with regard to the product feed to accommodate product delivery requirements. More particularly, exemplary embodiments are directed to modifying a fan wheel to include a receiving area in each fan tip for receiving a product feed device (e.g., conveyor belt, tape drive, roller and so forth), such that the product feed devices can be placed in alignment with the fan blades of the fan wheel. Such a feature provides better control of the products as they are transported into the fan blades, since the product feed can be placed in closer proximity to a fan arrangement along the direction of product transport. Further, such a feature allows for the use of wider fan tips, which can produce increased frictional surface contact with products being received from the product feed, and thereby reduce the possibility of product crashing within the fan pockets. Exemplary embodiments can therefore achieve enhanced product control without increasing the number of tape drives and/or delivery fans.
