    摘要: A system for processing a television signal including a data component, such as extended data services data, includes a decoder for processing the data component to provide data representing time information. A control device responds to the data for modifying time information, e.g., time of day, that is maintained in the system. The time information decoded from the video signal is compared to the time information maintained in the system to determine a time difference. If the time difference is in a predetermined range, the time difference indicates that the time information from the television signal is invalid. The control device responds to the time difference being in the predetermined range by preventing modification of the time information maintained in the system. A user may provide an input via a device such as a remote control to control the manner in which the control device responds to the time difference.

    摘要: A wide screen television apparatus comprises a memory for storing a set of video sources, a circuit for tuning to the set of video sources and a video signal processor. The video signal processor is coupled to the memory and to the tuning circuit, and develops a wide screen multiple picture display by selecting any one of the set of video sources for generating a main picture of the display and by selecting all of the set of video sources for generating supplemental pictures of the display, for example as three POP's. A remote control can be activated for choosing the set of video sources and for selecting the main picture from among the supplemental pictures. The multiple picture display is modified in a manner which identifies which one of the supplemental pictures corresponds to the main picture. An on-screen display indicator can be generated for the supplemental picture corresponding to the main picture. In an alternative, the supplemental picture corresponding to the main picture can be repositioned on the display. In another alternative, the supplemental picture corresponding to the main picture can be modified in appearance.

    摘要: A wide screen television apparatus comprises a video display having a first vertical display height and a first format display ratio. A first video processor combines video signals representative of at least two pictures for side by side display of the pictures on the video display, each of the pictures having a second format display ratio smaller than approximately 4:3. A vertical height control decreases the vertical display height smaller than the first vertical display height during the side by side display of said pictures, each of the side by side pictures thereby having a third format display between the .first and second format display ratios. The first, or a second, video processor horizontally compresses each of the pictures to correct for any image aspect ratio distortion due to decreasing the vertical deflection height. In an illustrated embodiment, the first format display ratio is about 16:9, the second format display ratio is about 8:9 and the third format display ratio is about 8:7.

    摘要: An automatic channel sampler system, including a television signal tuner, displays an array of inset pictures on a display screen each time the receiver is turned on. Each inset picture is a still video picture (i.e., freeze-frame) selected by tuning each of the channels in a scan list of channels. Automatic channel sampling is initiated in response to the development of operating power, and is performed while the picture tube is dark during the time in which the picture tube is warming up. A separate user-enterable scan list may be provided for either the automatic channel sampling function, a manually initiated channel sampling function, or both. The separate scan list may be programmed to contain only those channels which the viewer regularly watches, and would have the triple advantages of excluding the sampling of channels carrying programming which is not of interest to the viewer, presenting the sampled images in whatever order is desired by the user, and shortening the time necessary to complete the channel sampling function by eliminating the sampling of the undesired channels.

    摘要: An on-screen display generator for use in an image display system is disclosed. The on-screen display generator includes a main image signal source, and an auxiliary image signal source which includes a controller for varying the perceived brightness of the image represented by the auxiliary image signal in response to a first control signal. A video signal processor, coupled to the main image signal source and the auxiliary image signal source, includes circuitry for combining the main and auxiliary image signals to produce a combined image signal. The video signal processor further includes a controller for varying the perceived brightness of the image represented by the combined image signal in response to a second control signal. A control signal generator generates the first and the second control signals in such a manner that the perceived brightness of the auxiliary image signal remains substantially constant when the perceived brightness of the main image is varied. This on-screen display generator is disclosed as being embodied in a sleep timer in a television receiver.
