By using reactive shaped charges, a dynamic underbalance effect associated with detonation of a perforating system is enhanced without compromising shot density. Fewer shaped charges can be loaded to achieve the same or better effective shot density as a gun fully loaded with conventional shaped charges, thereby increasing the free volume within the gun while creating debris-free tunnels with fractured tips and substantially eliminating the crushed zone surrounding each perforated tunnel. Further, the strength and grade of gun steel required to construct the gun can be reduced without compromising the amount the gun swells following detonation.

A plurality of explosive charges are located within the interior bore of at least two of the tubular sections of the tubular assembly. A firing head is carried on the tubular assembly for detonating the explosive charges to perforate a surrounding well bore. The firing head has a concentric detonator arrangement within a hollow central bore. The explosive charges are held within the interior bore of the tubular section by a support. The explosive charges and charge support are comprised of materials which disintegrate upon detonation of the explosive charges, whereby the interior bore of the tubular assembly is fully open after detonation.

An improved downhole explosive charge carrier is disclosed. The invention uses a unique staggered charge pattern and a mounting configuration which allows the use of a straight, axially-located detonator in order to achieve a greater number of shots per unit length over conventional carriers. The invention also reduces the interference caused by the detonator and the closeness of the shots and thereby increases the performance of the individual charges, allowing smaller charges to be used to achieve the same perforation size.

A high density perforating gun having a carrier housing tube and an interior charge holder tube through which are mounted zinc alloy shaped charges in a phased relationship between about 135 and 145 degrees. The 135 to 145 degree phased relationship provides for an 18 shot per foot perforating gun system. The shaped charges of selected length are inserted into the carrier housing tube and held in place by fastener rings fitted to fastener ring slots. The nose ends of the shaped charges are fitted with ears to receive a detonating cord. This positions the primer cord in tension and generally coaxially with the carrier housing tube to prevent charge interference and assure sequential detonation.

The vent sleeve is moved by an actuator subassembly, which is to be connected above the packer if the vent and actuator subassemblies are used with a packer. The actuator subassembly has a piston housing, a piston slidably disposed in the piston housing, and a connector string extending from the piston to the vent sleeve. The piston is responsive to a differential pressure existing between the annulus outside the actuator subassembly and an interior pressure within the actuator subassembly.

A low actuation pressure bar vent for use in a tool string having low pressure therein. The vent includes a body portion and a piston slidingly disposed in the body. The piston and body define a first cavity therebetween and a second cavity therebetween, spaced from the first cavity. The body further defines a plurality of transverse ports therethrough providing communication between a body central opening and a well annulus. When in a closed position, the piston sealingly closes the ports. In a first embodiment, the first cavity has a spring disposed therein. The body also defines a second plurality of ports therein providing fluid communication between the first cavity and the well annulus. Pressure in the well annulus and the spring bias the piston toward an open position uncovering the ports. In an alternate embodiment, a pressurized gas biases the piston. The second cavity is filled with a fluid such that movement of the piston is prevented. A break plug is positioned in the piston and includes a shearable portion, which when sheared, allows the fluid in the second cavity to be released to the tubing string. The biasing force moves the piston to the open position, displacing the fluid from the second cavity. During assembly, an assembly plug holds the piston closed.

The break down of the rock fabric at the tunnel tip, caused by the near-instantaneous overpressure generated within the tunnel, further creates substantially debris-free tunnels in conditions of limited or no underbalance as well as in conditions of overbalance.
