Abstract:
A slackless coupler assembly having a ball and race assembly provided in the coupler butt. The ball and race assembly comprises a ball member having a substantially spherical shape and a one piece race member which is formed integrally with at least a portion of the ball member in a manner so as to enable rotational movement of the ball member with respect to the one piece race member. The outer surface of the one piece race member has a shape which is capable of being placed within an aperture of a male connection member so as to enable rotational movement of the male connection member with respect to a female connection member. A telescoping spring is provided to maintain the coupler knuckle in a substantially vertical direction. A slackless coupler assembly of the present invention eliminates the need for expensive draft gears.
Abstract:
A connection assembly for use in either an articulated coupling arrangement and/or a slackless drawbar arrangement for connecting together adjacently disposed ends of a pair of railway vehicles in a semi-permanent manner is provided. The connection assembly comprises a spherical member and a modified male connection member wherein the male connection member includes an aperture and a portion of the inner surface of the male connection member formed by this aperture forms a part of the inner surface upon which the spherical member rotates against. Such assembly mechanism includes at least one vertically disposed lug member secured to an outer surface of a vertically disposed side wall of a cavity formed in one end of such female connection member adjacent an opening formed in such side wall portion. There is at least one horizontally disposed lug member secured to such outer surface adjacent another portion of such opening in such side wall portion. A locking member is engageable with each of such vertical lug member and such horizontal lug member and a portion of a shaft-like member extending outwardly from such bearing assembly. The locking member removably secures such shaft-like member against rotation in such opening. A locking device is engageable with such locking member and such vertical lug member and such horizontal lug member which locks such locking member in a secure manner to such verticl lug member and such horizontal lug member.
Abstract:
A method of preassembling a slackless type drawbar assembly prior to installation into an end portion of a center sill member secured to a railway freight car. The method comprising the steps of providing a carrier plate member having a means for securing such carrier plate member to a flange portion of such center sill member. Securing a pair of radially opposed and axially aligned shaft support members to a top surface of the carrier plate member. Positioning a drawbar assembly on top of the shaft support members and securing in place. Positioning at least one crushable wedge support member on the top surface of such carrier plate member adjacent the shaft support members. Setting a pair of radially opposed locking wedge members on such at least one crushable support member. Securing the locking wedge members to such at least one crushable support member and the carrier plate member without distorting such at least one crushable support member. Then, positioning this assembly into such end portion of such center sill member and securing it thereto. Thereafter, tightening the locking wedge members in place until all slack has been removed from such slackless drawbar assembly thereby at least one of crushing and flattening the crushable support member.
Abstract:
An articulated coupling male connection member support assembly having an improved lubrication arrangement incorporated therein. Such support assembly includes a bottom ring bearing member supported on an upper surface of a bottom wall portion of a female connection member adjacent an outer end thereof. The bottom ring bearing member has a concave shaped spherical upper surface. An upper ring bearing member having a convex shaped spherical bottom surface is supported by such concave upper surface of the bottom ring bearing member. The upper ring bearing member has a substantially flat upper surface for supporting a bottom surface of a male connection member adjacent an outer end thereof. There is a substantially solid lubricating liner member disposed between such concave shaped spherical upper surface of the bottom ring bearing member and such convex shaped spherical bottom surface of the upper ring bearing member. This substantially solid lubricating liner member is secured to one of such concave shaped spherical upper surface and such convex shaped spherical bottom surface.
Abstract:
This invention provides a locking wedge assembly capable of exerting a predetermined pressure in at least one direction. Such assembly removably secures a male connection member to a female connection member of an articulated coupling arrangement. Such articulated coupling arrangement used to secure one end of a first railway car to an adjacent end of said railway car in a semi-permanent fashion. The assembly includes a wedge-shaped member having a surface engageable with a surface located in an opening in a side wall portion of a cavity at an outer end of the female member and another surface engageable with a surface on a shaft member of a spherical bearing carried by such male member. An aperture is formed through such wedge-shaped member along a longitudinal axis thereof. A bolt member is disposed through this aperture and an aperture formed through a bottom wall on the outer end of such female member adjacent the side wall opening. At least one force exerting device is positioned intermediate either the top surface of the wedge member and the bottom surface of the head of such bolt on the bottom surface of the bottom wall and the top surface of the nut carried by the bolt.
Abstract:
A bearing assembly having a removable shaft member. The shaft member has a center portion is designed such that rotation of the ball portion of the bearing assembly on the center portion is prevented. A first end portion extends outwardly from one end of the center portion and has a diameter substantially equal to an arcuate portion formed in a first side wall portion of a cavity located at one end of the female connection member. A flat face portion engageable by a wedge member is provided on the first end portion. A locking device is engageable with the first end portion to secure the ball portion against lateral movement in a first direction. A second end portion extends outwardly from the other end of the center portion and has a diameter also substantially equal to a diameter of an arcuate portion in a second side wall portion of the cavity. A flat face is formed on the second end portion which is engageable by another wedge member, thereby securing the male member to the female connection member. Another locking device is engageable on the second end portion to prevent the ball portion of the bearing assembly to prevent lateral movement in a second direction.
