A process for selectively recovering a nitrophenolic by-product from nitration waste water in substantially pure form by solvent extraction is provided. The pH of the waste water is adjusted using an acid to affect the solubility of a particular nitrophenolic by-product in the waste water so that the by-product is selectively separable from the other components of the nitration waste water by solvent extraction.

A process for treating nitrophenolic by-products contained in nitration waste water including the steps of solvent extraction, solvent and nitrophenolic residue recovery by distillation, and incineration of the nitrophenolic residue is disclosed. The extraction process involves the extraction of the nitrophenolic by-products from the nitration waste water utilizing a solvent in the presence of an acid at an elevated temperature and acidic pH. The extraction produces a nitrophenolic solvent solution which is subjected to a distillation to recover the solvent for reuse and produce a residue containing the nitrophenolic materials. The residue can be disposed of by incineration.

A two-stage process for the co-production of aniline and m-phenylenediamine where, in the first stage, benzene, nitric acid, and sulfuric acid are reacted in a liquid phase to produce in greater amounts nitrobenzene (approximately 70%) and m-dinitrobenzene (approximately 30%), and in lesser or trace amounts o-dinitrobenzene and p-dinitrobenzene, and water; and in the second stage the products of the first stage are reacted with hydrogen in the gas phase to produce aniline (approximately 70%) and m-phenylenediamine (approximately 30%) in greater amounts, and o-phenylenediamine and p-phenylenediamine in lesser amounts, and water. The reaction products are separated by distillation. The first stage of a preferred embodiment of the process is characterized in that a concentrated mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid are fed along with mononitrobenzene to a first reactor for producing dinitrobenzene, and then the dilute acid mixture recovered from this first reactor is fed along with benzene to a second reactor for producing the mononitrobenzene used as a reactant in the first reactor. The second stage, which provides the aniline and m-phenylenediamine in major amounts, is characterized in that the hydrogenation is carried out in the gas phase with product aniline serving as a diluent. The process is applicable to the co-production of other aromatic mono- and diamines.

An aircraft weathervaning device having a supporting framework rotatably journaled with respect to a fixed cylinder and movable axially between a first position against the ground, whereat the aircraft is moved into place and secured, and a second position a few inches above the ground whereat the supporting framework, together with the aircraft, is free to turn in weathervane fashion always to face into the wind. The supporting framework is in the form of a T-bar having adjustable arms terminating in wheel pads adapted to receive and have lashed thereto the wheels of a tricycle landing gear. The T-bar supporting framework can readily be modified into an H-bar configuration for supporting a circular deck to accommodate movable wing aircraft.

A process of selectively recovering a nitrophenolic by-product, namely 2,4-dinitrophenol and picric acid, from nitration waste water in substantially pure form through the control of the solution pH of the nitration waste water and subsequent precipitation is provided. By adjusting the solution pH of the nitration waste water with an acid to a pH in the range of from about 4.0 to 0.5, the solubility of the selected nitrophenolic by-products is affected and the crystal formation of the individual by-products controlled.

A weathervaning tiedown device for tricycle landing gear light aircraft is described, comprising an aircraft supporting framework and mechanism for elevating and lowering the supporting framework between a position at ground level, whereat an aircraft can be moved into place for tie down, and an elevated position, whereat it is free to rotate with the weathervaning aircraft. The supporting framework comprises a flat T-shaped deck for placement for tie down of the aircraft. The elevating mechanism comprises a foundation in the form of a below-level trough receivable within which is the understructure of the framework in such a manner as to permit underside portions of the flat framework deck to rest flush against the ground when in lowered or ground level position.
