A wet-on-wet process for producing multicoat color and/or effect coating systems is disclosed. The process involves using aqueous functional coating materials comprising (A) at least one crosslinkable binder, (B) at least one separate, water-soluble and/or -dispersible crosslinking system which independently effects partial or complete crosslinking in and/or on the matrix of the wet, drying and/or dried films (2) of the aqueous functional coating materials before the binders (A) crosslink completely; and (C) at least one pigment.

The present invention relates to an aqueous powder coating dispersion which can be prepared by processing the binder of the powder coating material and/or the crosslinker of the powder coating material or the entire powder coating material to give a powder by spray drying and then preparing an aqueous powder coating dispersion using the spray-dried powder. The present invention additionally relates to a process for preparing the aqueous powder coating dispersion and to the use of the powder coating dispersion, especially for the coating of automobile bodies.

The invention concerns a novel aqueous composition that can be hardened physically, thermally and/or with actinic radiation, containing a compound of general formula (I): X[NH—C(═O)—NH—Y—NH—C(═O)—OR]2 having at least one urea and urethane group, wherein the variables have the following meaning: R represents identical or different polyalkylene glycol ether radicals; X represents a bivalent substituted or unsubstituted arylene radical; Y represents identical bivalent substituted or unsubstituted arylene radicals, which are the same as or different from radical X or different bivalent substituted or unsubstituted arylene radicals of which none or one is identical to radical X. The invention also concerns the utilization of said compound for the production of novel aqueous coating materials, adhesives and sealants that can be hardened physically, thermally or thermally and with actinic radiation and their derivatives.

The invention relates to aqueous clearcoats comprising a multicomponent aqueous dispersion which comprises: A) at least one aqueous dispersion of a hydroxyl-containing binder, and B) a stable aqueous dispersion of a hydrophobic amino resin, said dispersion being prepared using a hydroxyl-containing emulsifier. The hydrophobic amino resin in component B) is preferably a hydrophobic melamine resin and the hydroxyl-containing binder in component A) is preferably a hydroxyl-containing polyacrylate. Further embraced by the invention are a method of applying multilayer coatings, in which the aqueous coating materials of the invention are used as topcoat, and substrates coated with such multilayer coatings.
